Default need master cylinder

SOR has them for about $170 for a '77 FJ40.

Any ideas on where I can get one for a better price? NAPA has them for $90-$140. Why they so expensive?

I've heard stories of how it's not worth it to rebuild.

Try here:

Import Car Parts
1205 W. Dartmouth (near Santa Fe)
303-789-1789

The parts are made by the same Japanese companies that make Toyota parts, but they won't have the words "Toyota" on them. Quality is the same; price usually much less.

And shhhh... it's a secret.

Import Parts Warehouse on Santa Fe just south of 6th usually sells Aisin brake masters for around $100. I have used CCoT's brake master and despite being non-Japanese it worked fine.

Rebuilding only works if it's not too pitted inside, and you can't know until you get inside it. If you can only have the rig down for a limited time rebuikding can be risky for that reason. I always prefer to have the new part in my hand when I start something like that. You can always rebuild your old one once you determine that it's rebuilable, and then put it on the shelf for next time.

For the record, the last 3 masters I've bought were all OEM from dealer.
