Smile Cool experiment with a weather balloon

Saw this on the 'Net. How cool is this Dad?

Following the lead of some MIT students, my 6 year old son and I launched a weather balloon last Friday into near space. Here are the results. For Science!!!

Check out the pictures and the captions first (link above). I think this would be a lot of fun to do with my kids.

If you're still interested, here is some interesting discussion about this flight on Reddit.

That is very awesome. He didn't even have to put his kid in the cooler. If this guy is single all he willhave to do is post about this on his dating profile and every mom out there will be all over him. LOL

That is f'in awesome. Wonder if this constitutes breaking the FCC rules about using cell phones during flight?

This is fantastic! What a great thing to do with your kids. I do have to call BS on the 90K foot altitude; this would exceed the Cocom limits of SPS GPS and would not be reported by the GPS chipset.

Have you guys seen this Parrot AR drone that you can control with an iPhone or iPad? It takes HD video. More info here. This thing is super cool!

I'm pretty sure it breaks FAA rules without the proper coordination and approval for balloon launching. Ingesting that into an engine could make for an interesting decent profile. If anyone intends on trying this, PM me for some much needed phone #'s and contact info.

Edge of Space Sciences: http://www.eoss.org/

The EOSS guys do amateur radio balloon launches and fly payloads for fun and for students. We use APRS to track the balloons, each of them have a beacon on them for position and altitude data. And they get FAA waivers when they do them, so you are correct Stan. They need to have a launch location, time and predicted path. Most times the launch site is up near Windsor and predicted recoveries are way out on the plains to stay out of DIA's airspace.

BTW, Erin King, AK4JG, won 1st place in the 2012 QST video contest with a balloon launch video.

Seeing that thing at 91,000" makes you think. Not to detract from that girls pretty awesome achievement but....

Crazy that Kittinger jumped from 102,000' and that Austrian Dude is going to go for 120,000'
