What's it supposed to do? break up the ice? dredge the river bottom?

It smashes up the ice in the rivers in springtime to facilitate water flow and prevent flooding. Rivers that run through the city, that is. Otherwise the ice can get all jammed up and cause all sorts of problems.

I dunno: if you were the guy that got to operate that machine you would be French.

75 FJ40 with stuff; and now weighing in at 4370 lbs.

Yes. The rest of the time it's on strike.

Only 6 weeks? I'm thinking that is a little light...IIRC my relatives in Germany said that many in Europe get 8-12 weeks paid vacation
