Default New Radio

Got a little somethin'-somethin' to utilize the slash/AG part of my ticket!

This sucker is h-e-a-v-y! I'm going to finally join the herd and do the separation thing. Stick the radio under a seat or something and find a place for the face. The FT-8800 I have now is really too heavy for the ceiling mount and this weighs twice as much and is 25% longer.

I bought Hamsticks for 10, 20 and 40 as a start. Main thing is that I'm not sure if I'm going with a screwdriver or ATU with a long whip. Thinking probably tuner for a couple of reasons, but in the case of a tuner they won't go to waste. The Hamsticks have fairly narrow bandwidth, particularly at 40 and longer, so a tuner would at least get more RF out of the radio and onto the antenna if the tune is at the edge or drifts a little.

BTW, after passing the general I gave the extra a shot. Missed 17 of 50, so 4 shy of getting it. Next time with a little studying. I'm pretty sure I know the class of questions I missed, the operation on satellites and maritime for one. No idea what you have to do when operating on a ship. No clue.

Default Ding! Ding! Ding!

The FT-857D!!

Nice! I have had this radio for 3 years and it has been an AWESOME radio! Ham sticks will get you going, but now you need the LDG FT-Meter to put on your dash, a BetterRF Tune Control Unit and at least a Radio Shack external speaker.

Then you need to avoid all of the hype with brand-x, and go right to the best with a Hi-Q antenna and either their RICU (Radio Independent Control Unit) Stepper motor controller, or a N2VZ Turbo Tuner for automatic screwdriver control.

I currently have the Hi-Q 5/80 remote tune model and use a couple 8' whips from Radio Shack trimmed to best resonance on the lower HF/higher HF frequencies. I also have the Turbo Tuner, as the RICU from Hi-q is not available yet.

Dave, if you do opt to get a screwdriver antenna, I have a turns-counter from MFJ that I never have used. It is an MFJ-1922 Automatic Screwdriver controller. Basically it is a turns counter that operates using the internal reed switches on the antennas.

I love this radio. It is easy to program once you become familiar with the menu functions. It is a great radio to hide, and the faceplate comes off easily to take in the house just in case. You may miss the DTMF microphone, but they sell one for it. I haven't broken down yet and got it.

Name the time and we'll get together at my house and have a few while playing radio.

I think Dave posted the radio in the OP picture. Tom, are you going to get one, too?
