Default Transmission Output Shaft Wear

Last year I pulled an 4 speed transmission and t-case from the junk yard, so I don't know their history. Last week I ordered up new gaskets and seals and Sunday I seperated the two and found the output shaft of the transmision has some wear. So, how much wear is too much on a 4 speed transmission output shaft?

Can this be put in and run as is? How difficult is it to replace the transmission output shaft?

Yeah, I agree with wes, looks like pretty significant wear...

I bet the output shaft is pretty pricey from toyota if it is still available.

Maybe it's time to do a rebuild on it. And MAYBE you could get a decent used one from SOR or something. rebuilding it should not be that hard, I've never done a toyota box, but manual tranny's aren't typically that hard to do. I'd bet you could knock it out.

If it were me I'd rip it the rest of the way apart and see what it looks like.

X2 the first 2 pic's weren't looking that bad but the last one is really bad. Thruthfully, the way you wheel your rig you probably wouldn't have a problem though it might be noisy, but why put something in like that if you don't have to?

That is kind of what I was thinking but I was also holding out hope that you guys would have said something like - "oh that's nothing, you've got at least another 200K miles before you should expect any problems..."

I just got back with a 4 speed from Air Randy. The difference is very dramatic, and I won't be going with the one I picked up out of the junkyard. So, I'm back on track.

Those photos look fairly similar to the output of the H42 I pulled from my 76 with just under 300k miles on it. It's from where the input gear rides. I just stuck it into my 71 and have another ~20-30k miles on it, works fine.
