Thumbs up National Forest Maps

Tired of getting lost? Want to know where the boundaries of the forest are? Want to discover new routes and areas within your National Forest? Check out the National Forest Store where you can purchase maps online for all of your favorite National Forests!

http://www.nationalforeststore.com/

...seriously I'm just discovering this series of maps, and have been spending quite a bit of time looking over them for various forests and planning trips that I'd like to take to areas I wouldn't even know existed if I didn't have my hands on these...

...I still like the National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps too, though - I just figure you can't have too many maps! And it's interesting what the varying amounts of detail there are and what features are more prominent from one map to another, very good to compare, in my opinion...

Now if only Martin would prompt the USFS to get the MVUM's out in print so we can clearly tell which routes are legal and which are not, that would be great

Good advice Matt. We're also big fans of the Latitude 40 maps.

http://latitude40maps.com/

I have one of those double top flap pilot's map cases that we usually bring along. Sure, just buy a GPS receiver they say, but spreading out a map or reading a guide book gives me a better feeling for the area that a tiny little LCD just can't duplicate. Same reason I wear a watch with hands, there is a hard to replicate understanding of what part of the day or planning for a block of time that doesn't necessarily require the exact time.

It's also the original solar powered mapping system, just need the sun to see the squiggly lines...

the fs maps rock.

I usually stop at the clear creek ranger district if I need one. Most fs district stations have them on the spot. Make sure you get the waterproof ones not the paper ones. I don't know why they still make both.

Make sure to use them with the MVUM's. The National Forest maps are all pretty old and will show routes/trails/campgrounds that are now closed.

Too bad you're missing the Rising Sun meetings as I've been passing out the printed maps.

Is there a place for one-stop shopping to get copies of the MVUMs?
