Default Drive shaft help

What model and year do I need to look for if I want a double cardan drive shaft? I have one now that I blew up. I thought I could get one from a 1986 or new mini truck but can't remember now.

Need to buy one soon so I can get it to the shop, cut and balanced and on the truck.

TIA GUYS.

It doesn't matter. If you don't want to do any work, then get something from an 85 or older.

If you don't mind doing some work, then get something newer, and clearance it:

Not sure yet, I need to pull it out but it is sounding like some teeth let loose.

I need to order the gears in the next few days. I may look for another case too and do the install in a clean case. I'll let you know when I have a time set, will be after the 4th.

Just take the one you have to Rocky Mtn Driveline and let them rebuild it. I took my standard rear drive shaft to them out of the Blue Mule and they made it into a double cardan shaft for me.

I exploded the center section of mine. Not sure if it is worth rebuilding. It would be cheaper to but the cardan for $50 and have it rep[laced than rebuild. I think I will use RM this time vs Englewood, just a hunch but who knows.

Thanks, I cleaned up the garage so I have plenty of room. Even have an 8' steel table in there.

I am going to do it in parts like you did sort of. First the transfer case, then take out the rest of it and replace the clutch. Most likely will need some help with that.

Tom: There are actually a few different double cardan joints out there. The early ones were the SMALL pattern and are actually not as strong as the 84-85 double cardans. There is a size difference in the center bearing. Sure it isn't a marshmallow, but there is a significant difference in strength. People have been known to break the early ones, but the late ones are really tough to break.

The IFS double cardans have hardly any flex to 'em unless you take the time to take them all apart and grind the crap out of 'em for clearance. Too much work for me. Hold out for the big pattern solid axle double cardan.

Interestingly, on the single u-joint end, the IFS truck's front driveshaft can handle more angle than the front single u-joint on the solid axle shaft (without grinding).

So the ultimate is a 1984-1985 front double cardan and a 1986+ front U-joint.
*shrugs* lots of other combos work just fine out there in the rocks too.
