Question FJ60 Won't Start

Hello All,

First post/thread here, and unfortunately it is a cry for help.

Setup: 1984 FJ60, totally stock mechanically and electrically (AFAIK), PO wheeled it moderately, 201k on original 2F/H42/xfer case.

Problem: Will not start. No tick-tick-tick, nothing.

Symptoms:
1. Intermittent power loss when driving (electrical in nature, I hear relays or something clicking, and the seat-belt indicator comes on as if it has just turned on),
2. Peculiar behavior when I switch on ignition sometimes (seat-belt indicator and "Charge" light doesn't come on for a few minutes, and when it does it is accompanied by clicks.
3. Also, the carb fan will stay on sometimes, even when the key is in the "On" position, as if it hasn't gotten the message that the ignition system is energized.

The windshield was just replaced yesterday morning, and it would not start after that (and so I could not make it to the rally ).

Troubleshooting so far:
1. I have checked continuity on the fusible links (good),
2. Tried to jump the starter with 12V from battery with the key in "on" position (did not work).

Is my starter solenoid dead? Or is there a wiring issue with the ignition switch/system? What can I do from here? I am in a hard situation as this is my current DD and currently my sole means to get to work (my Corolla is on long-term loan to a friend; prolly shouldn't have let it go so easy ).

Thank you!

I know how you feel, I can't get my 4Runner started! Im not a gearhead, I know enough to get me by and look like I know some **** in front of the ladies, but I think pretty much everyone one here knows a whole lot more than I, so you won't have any troubles figuring out what the problem is. If nothing else, they will point you to the guy who does....who is probably a member here. Good Luck!

You could try tapping the starter solenoid and then trying to start it. If it works, you may need to start looking at replacing the starter, or putting new contacts in the solenoid. Will it bump/roll start? Make sure you have good ground connections - battery to frame, engine to frame, etc.

Thanks, Subzali.

I tried tapping the solenoid, no go. I am going to try getting a new ignition relay - there is power at the starter, but no "signal" to get it going (according to my voltmeter)

And thanks, Big-J: I think you and I are at about the same place!

is on her way in her Scion to run me to the parts store...

Maybe you have some bad grounds. First make sure like tim says the battery terminals are clean and the clamps are tight. Also make sure the ground wire coming from the battery to the fender and block is in good shape. I noticed on my 60 it has gotten really frayed over the years where it bolts to the body at that funky clamp halfway down the wire from the block.
