Default Rigs in Costa Rica

My wife and I were fortunate enough to take a 10 day vacation to Costa Rica earlier in the month. It was our first visit to Central America, and we really enjoyed everything about Costa Rica: the locals were always friendly, the mountains and forests stunning, and the beaches had every type of sand and surf imaginable.

I don't think I'll share all the details of the vacation, but in keeping with the spirit of Rising Sun, the other great thing about Costa Rica is the trucks. I guess I've reached a point in my life where I drool over a nice diesel Cruiser as often as I'll stare at lady in a bikini. It got to the point where there were so many Cruisers that I stopped pointing them out: dozens of newer tray back 70 series, a few newer Troopies, Prados and Fortuners everywhere, probably 100+ FJ40 and BJ40's, solid-axle diesel minis, and 3 door BJ74's that were government issued power and gas trucks. Plus there were TDi 110 Defenders all over the place, a bunch of Series 88's, and Patrols old and new. Not as many 60's, 80's and 100's, but they were around. And 1 diesel 200 series cruisin' the streets of Tamarindo.

I took a few pictures, so I thought I'd post them up in true truck porn fashion. Enjoy!

The first 40 we saw about 10 minutes away from the airport, and followed up to the volcano. Little did I know there would be many, many more...

Most of the 40's looked something like this. Nothing much to look at, but still running strong (the strap was just because the ignition or battery was out).

This was our ride for the week. I found a place that advertised the modern version of the BJ74 (3 door) as a rental, but when I arrived the guy said they stopped renting those a few years back. So we settled for the diesel Prado. I got her stuck on the beach about mid-week, so Becky said that was my wheelin' for the trip and we couldn't sign up for one of those "jungle adventures in a Cruiser".....

Nice white 80:

We hired this guy for a private surfing lesson. He was a Kiwi with an American wife and two young kids that had moved to CR 2 years ago. The 80 was his "client truck", and his other ride is a 78 BJ40. Not too bad....

And the engine for that 80. What's wrong with this picture?

Another "what's wrong with this picture?"

Popped the hood to check out the engine, and found the battery under a bit of duress. I guess the potholes and constant washboard roads took their toll. I tightened up the battery tie downs, but the ground wire was someone else's problem.

This one had the 5LE, 3.0 liter, 4 cylinder diesel with a 5 speed manual. Not much pep, but she sounded real nice. Note the lack of emissions wires and tubes - just and engine, some coolant hoses, and a master cylinder - simple.

A few more....

bitchin' Patrol

The only 100 series I saw, along with a pretty cool ambulance.

There were tons of these Troopy ambulances. I'd like to pick one of these up at a govt auction in 10 years.....

Wow, really cool. Do you think this would be a good vacation spot with kids?

Is that a carburetor on the 80?
