Default Check Engine Light

I was driving to work today and my CEL came on. Is there a way I can figure out the code on my own? I don't have many tools, but have heard you can count the number of times a certain light blinks. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

I'm assuming that being your truck is a 97 that you have obdII. I've never dealt with an 80 so I guess I could be wrong there. Anyway, if it is obd compliant you can just take it to autozone and they can check it for free. There might be a way to get it to flash the code as well, not sure.

If you are in the Aurora area you can swing by my place and I can get the codes with my scanner for you.

If you had an FJ62 you'd be counting blinks... but your 97 has a much more upgraded system called OBD2. So you need to get a reader... just go to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto Parts and they can read it for you for free. Then post up here what the number is.

Or, hook up with about half the membership here who has their own readers... I've got one in the 80 at all times, but I'm not around this week and kind of far from you.

I'll put my buck on P0401 though, for the pool..

edit: satchel types faster than me.

Thanks guys!!! I'll do that over lunch and then post up.

Nakman, are you on the northside? I live in lakewood, but work in broomfield.

There is a checker or autozone up on mcaslin just north of 36 that I know of. Just make sure you use the diagnostic port under the dash, by your left shin. I tried using the one in the PS engine bay the first time, doesn't work so well

OBD2 codes are universal. Once you have the code, you can find out what it is HERE. Or just post it up. Likely the guy at autozone will tell you what it is.

yeah Nick I'm north side but I'm traveling all week, will be back Friday though if you don't get this figured out by then.

Last time I was at Checker I overheard them refusing to pull a code for a guy.. so I'd maybe try one of the others first.

If you come down south I've got a code reader as well

I'm with Nakman on the code but I've only ever had 3 ever pop up so far (all on the 80): P0401, P0171, and P0133

Or you could use this as an excuse to buy a scan guage or ultra gauge!
