do any of you 100 types have an opinion on this one?

This would be a family replacement vehicle for Hannah's Sienna. So a daily driver. I know the signficiant milestones (read the FAQ's etc) so I'm not looking for off road prowess, just a good solid vehicle she can drive especially in the winter instead of my 80 on 35's. Not that she can't handle my 80 but ... I'd prefer something else other than the Sienna.

so that's the 'user profile' of something like this for us ... what say anyone about this one in particular??
My first thought is its too low priced for what it is.
Wish I would have seen this earlier...I was parked next to this 100 yesterday while looking at an A3 TDI for the .

I didn't take a real close look at it but it didn't look too bad. Looking through the windows, the interior looked clean and in decent shape. The exterior showed some use...the front bumper had a good scuff on the right front corner and there were some scratches on the hood. I didn't do a walk around...I was just walking past it towards the dealership.

I have bought from private individuals and the dealer. I have had the dealer cars checked out and walked away from one after I read the report. The vehicle is what it is no matter the dealer or a private seller. Your job is to look behind the curtain to make sure it is what it appears to be.
thanks everyone for the responses.

So...Romer...I've only bought one car from a dealer before...
will they let me take the car for a day or two to a third party and have it checked? How do you accomplish that? Just ask them if you can take it for 2 days??

not sure about two days. When I bought Rachel's 4runner. They let me take it for the day (leaving my car there) to have it checked out by the end of the day. Her 4runner checked out and we bought it. For my 80, I had it checked out on-site by a fellow mudder. I passed on the first one after the report and bought the second one I found (Dealer on ebay).

I don't have time to read through 30+ pages in this thread, but was hoping to get some information: What are the main differences between the various years of the 100 series? Are certain years better than others based on features/changes?

Christo's time line is probably what you want to read.
http://www.sleeoffroad.com/newbie/newbieUZJ100.htm

IMHO. the 99 is sought after for the rear locker and the rear ac. (only year with both but not all have both). Then the 2003+ for the slight increase in power, 5 speed trans and overall model upgrade.

If you read through that, there are a LOT of changes in the 03 model. Larger driveshafts, gear ratio, engine, transmission, and on and on. It shows why the 03 is really the model to go with if you have the coin. I have seen one without the NAV and roof racks too, but only one. I was trying to find pics of it on mud, and just can't seem to locate it anymore. Rare one, that would have been a great snag. It was a cool color too.

Why are no Nav and no roof rack preferable?

IIRC, there are years that have the climate control tapped into factory nav. making it extremely difficult or impossible to switch it out, and if it takes a dump on you, your climate control is lost.

As to roofracks, I don't know specifically, could be the usual aesthetic + less entries for water thing.

I should have been more specific on that, it wasn't the rack so much as the rear valence thingy that directs airflow down the back window. The rack system on 100's is different than 80's. Anything that creates a hole in the body, and has a weatherstrip that can degrade over time and leave a gap to collect water/salt, is a bad thing. So, no valence, less holes and gaskets to have rust start under.

The no nav part is just that. In 03, the nav and climate controls are integrated. To loose the factory nav, you must convert the dash and it's about $1,500 worth of parts to do so. I have only ever heard of two 03's that did not have the nav. It was an option, but few people ordered them specifically without it. Don't know if they are still this way, but a dealer once told me that landcruisers were all allocation. Meaning, the dealer doesn't spec them or order them, they were just lucky to get whatever the manufacturer sent them. (Side note, I had a Honda dealer tell me the same thing about Civic SI's)
