Personally I'd keep the 80 unless your just not happy with it. The 100 gains more power maybe a little more MPG but both are dismal modified. Personally I don't think the comfort level is night and day between the two if they are built similarly.

The difference between wheeling the 80 for a week long trip and your 40 will indeed be night and day. That said I still miss my 40 and need to rebuild it someday.

Having built the 100 like my 80, I would disagree. It's more comfortable, the 5 speed is great, more powerful. I have no regrets

To me the level of comfort is night and a couple days or a week. There is way more leg room. The seats are way more comfortable. The ride is much more comfortable. The 100 is way quieter which provides an overall level of comfort that light years ahead of the 80. heated seats, it goes on and on...

It's got more power but not tons but it feels like it compared to the 80.

My wife said just last night she didn't love the 100, she loves, loves, loves it.

My only regret is I bought an 80 and not a 100 right from the start.

Maybe its because my 80 still only has 157K on it. I've driven a number of 100's and never said to myself "I need this". I actually like the seating position better in the 80. Maybe the seat is just molded to my backside

Ken I completely agree the 5-speed is a vast improvement over the early 100's and 80's.

Sounds like you advertised the LX for sale and it is more of a matter of getting the right price? Seems like you are wanting to sell it so go for it. You are more of an expedition guy right which IMO that fits the 100 series really well. Get some new treads and sliders for the 100 and call it good for awhile. I'd probably sell my LX if someone offered me anywhere close to what I think it is worth...You just have to get past that initial pain of thinking of all the work you put into the LX - Everytime I think of doing another mod to my LX (like dual battery setup) I hold off because I wonder why do it if someday I'm just going to sell it and get a 100 and want to do the same to it?

It sure was! I have a buddy who is looking hard for a locked 80. He came with us on the Gulches run. I'm certain he'd be very, very interested in your 80. He's got cash in hand too. I can put you in touch if you're ready.

galactic gray, nice. It's the only color besides white I could deal with, maybe the thunder cloud.

reality is my needs are maybe different than barrys. I like a well set up 80. treeroots, jackets, bruce's, etc. i just can't move the seat back far enough and if i used the extender it would put the seat into the kids being as tall as i am. Not to mention i hate having the a pillar in front of me. I had the same mod done in my old 60 and ended up hating it. I always hated the fender flares and crappy molding the 80 has. The 100 has clean lines imho. For me the move to a 2004 with nav, steering wheel radio contols, nav, 5speed make it nice. As davis always says the front seat is a barcalounger.
For what i've wheeled, ehill, the alpine tunnel, alpine loop, usual passes in cb etc. For me the 100 is 90% as capable as an 80. The 80 is only maybe 50% of what a 100 is on road.

I can't wait to mod it in the spring.

Having had a locked, lifted 40th Anniversary and a lifted '03, both with 33s, I agree with Wes's percentage numbers. Yes, the 80 is a better wheeling machine but there is very little comparison between the two on-road. The 100 drives more like a sport sedan than an FJ62 which the 80 drives somewhat like. They are all good, though, but we already knew that.
