Default Shipping an engine

Anyone have experience shipping an engine? This would be from Bozeman, MT to my garage.

I've gotten a few using trucking companies. Strap it to a pallet and off it goes.

It usually works out fine assuming the seller was honest about the condition.

I have used several different trucking companies, basically whoever is cheapest after an internet search. The key is finding a trucking company with a terminal in Bozeman and one here so all the seller has to do is drop it off at their dock... when it gets here you'd head to the terminal with a trailer and pick it up. Make sure it is strapped down nicely, and also be ready to buy an oil pan... typically they get pretty bashed in no matter what.

Either UPS or FEdEx should be able to take care of this for you. The pallet is probably the best way to go.

I'll try to remember who I used to ship a transmission to my son in HI, Matt. He's local, owns some Cruisers and got me a good price.

I've used ABF and Swift with decent luck BTW.

Edit:

If he can get the motor on a pallet to Billings there is an ABF terminal there. Then it'd be a quick truck ride to Denver where you could pick it up at their terminal. terminal to terminal "less than truckload" shipping has always been the cheapest i've found for big stuff like a motor.

Jeff Van Wyk is the guy that helped me, I believe he and his Dad own the business.

Thanks, guys. I ended up posting the job on uShip.com and got a bid for $326, which I accepted. We'll see how it goes. If this falls through, I will call some of the suggestions listed.

Matt: shipping a used 1FZ-FE engine on a pallet. My 80 needs a heart transplant.

Daniel: I thought about the road trip option, but it would kill an entire weekend and cost me nearly the same in fuel plus a night at Motel 6.
