Default First 2m Radio & Antenna Question

So, I think I'm set on picking up a Yaesu FT-2900R for my first radio. There is a decent rebate out until the end of June and I can get it for about $150. Anything better I should look at for this same price?

Anyway, I was wondering what is a good antenna to pickup with this setup? I'll be mounting it in my 84 FJ60.

the 2900 is nice. big power with 75 w. It's a larger radio with heat sink.

If you need a smaller radio due to mounting location the 1900 is nice.

The Larsen NMO-150 is probably the standard in 5/8 wave.

I recently put a Yaesu FT2900R in my 40 along with a Comet SBB 25 2M antenna. I have been very happy with it.

The only issue with it is the size. If you have a place to mount it, it's a killer radio. I have a 2800 (older model) in my family room as a base station and it works great.

Thanks for the info...I figured if I had a radio sitting next to me I would have more incentive to study, so I ordered a FT-2900R from hamcity ($149.95). I'll get an antenna and mount next paycheck.

Still studying...the FT-2900R was shipped today, so I'm picking up the pace! Looking at antenna/mount options now. I'm looking to stay around $100 for antenna and mount.

Is NMO the way to go? I see most antennas have both options. I'm not going to drill any holes in my roof or anything, so I'd need a mag mount or something to mount to bumpers. I'd prefer hard mounting to the bumper.

For my CB, I have a Firestik mag mount with my 4" and a spring, but it doesn't quite fit right on top of my FJ60 since it has those raised sections. I'm probably going to have to figure something else out for that. I'd like to take it out, but I have buddies that use them...

Oh yeah sure you would!

but FWIW, those WILL fit a 60 series, and they work well with both NMO and the normal (SO-239) mounts. I prefer the 239 myself, but for no other reason than to standardize between both trucks and all my radios, want to have full interchangeability.

p.s. those fit 100's too Farnham.
