Default Solid Axle question.

Just agreed to buy a 81 front axle off pick up. Will it work with 3rd gen 4runner? I hope so... Any verification would be great.

Wrong side stock t-case drop. There are ways to deal with it, but it's not as simple as with 1986-1995 trucks.

Thanks... Just saved me $250, but broke my heart. Sounds like SAS will be out of my range for now( according to my wife , forever).

I would suggest checking out the TrailGear website they have some cool products. Might give you some ideas.

It's not impossible, but just more work and money than with older junk. The easiest way is a Dana 44 from a Jeep, but t-case swaps and axle cut-n-turns I think are other popular ways to SAS 3rd gens. Yotatech, Pirate, IH8MUD, Marlin, etc., poke around and see what can be done.

Just buy the whole truck with the 81 axle, then call Marlin Crawler.

No big loss. There is no stock bottom gusset on the 1981 front axle housing. 1984 and 1985 have the full length stock lower gusset already installed for SLIGHTLY more housing strength.

DANA 44 from a Jeep Wagoneer is a popular swap candidate because it drops on the correct side and you can get most aftermarket gear ratios to match your rear differential. You can also get enough aftermarket u joints, axle shafts and other stuff to make it hold up to big tires and lockers a bit better.

I like Dean's comment too.

Actually, I had so much fun with my crawler gears last weekend, going with a passenger drop, doubled T-case on a 3rd gen would be a nice addition to a toyota mini truck live front axle.

Double it with the adapter for your transmission, only thing you'll have to figure is the exhaust. Other issue is width, you will need some decent sized spacers to hit the correct width for the rear on a 3rd gen. IIRC, they are 61" or so.

Hence the popularity of them for 3rd gen SAS. They are the right width, can be found with 6 lug hubs and have the proper side drop. It's the most common way to do it since it's fastest and cheapest. The Dana 44 is a pretty equivalent axle to a Hilux 8", too.
