Makes sense to me, given the criteria. The EP staff tends to lean toward modern comfort and reliability for long distance travel. The fact that Toyota is represented in 4 of the top 8 (I'm sorry, but the Mercedes station wagon and the Grand Vitara are jokes and don't belong on the list) is a credit to our love of these Japanese trucks.

I'm actually surprised he didn't put a Rover higher on the list (a bias I've seen him have too often), but it's probably because of the reliability issues.

Actually the G wagon was designed an built by Steyr in Austria and was/is an incredible 4x4 vehicle. It is very much like an 80 series with solid axles, 3 lockers, etc. Although I agree that it isn't the best expedition vehicle with the 18's and body kit, in its pure form, it is as capable and durable as any 80. Steyr built the Haflinger, Pinzgauer and most of the Unimog, Mercedes just did the finish work and stuck their name on it.

This is a pretty decent list, but it's obviously for U.S. buyers.

No XJ or ZJ though, which in my mind would be good platforms - certainly better than a Vitara.....

I kind of thought this picture with the tire up in a situation that required a couple inches of articulation wasn't the best to prove the point.
