Default Wheeler Geologic Area

Has anyone explored the wheeler geologic area? Looks like a cool area to explore with the family and camping. Maybe this summer if I have time

I have always wondered where that was.

That would make a neat weekend RS trip for a small group.

That place looks great. I'd be a haul to get down there for a weekend, but certainly seems worth it.

Been back there a couple of times.

http://www.armbrusterweb.com/tripsfo.../swcopage.html

The drive in is not difficult, stock with pinstripes and bumper drags at most. My truck on 30" tires and no lockers made it fine. It's an interesting place.

BTW, the road and parking area are 100% within the La Garita Wilderness, so you are not allowed to pull off or truck camp. There is an old saw mill at the entrance to the road where you can camp and there's a nice USFS campground north on highway 149 near Creede where you can get to the river.

If you drive up in the area, be sure to also check out the Slumgullion earth flow, which blocked the Lake Fork of the Gunnison, creating Lake San Cristobal. This is the 2nd largest natural lake in Colorado. This is along CO149 just south of Lake City.

should have figured you'd been back there Dave. Most everyone that does ouray or the alpine loop should see the slumgullion flow.

I was thinking of entering the area from the other end or finding some roads from 114.

The wilderness throws wrenches in that. Road #600 starting at roughly Trujillo Creek and Canyon Nieve is literally a corridor through, so one way in and out. Before this point, the road does split from Divide Park to the south and the road from Hanson Mill ruins parallels the boundary. The road up from Divide, that is a potential alternate from South Fork. AFAIK there's really no other way to drive to Wheeler that doesn't go through Creede or South Fork, though you can hike from the Saguache Creek side over Half Moon Pass. The campground on that side of the wilderness is Stone Cellar. This is a great trip, too, from Mexican Joe and Cochetopa.

Dave it right, it's not a hard drive and ewell worth the trip. It's a haul down there, but to do wheeler and stoney pass ciniman pass etc would make for a great long weekend.
