Default rural internet access

Making an offer on a home near Evergreen ... so there are limitations on internet access. Wild Blue seems like the only option - true? What others should I look at?

This is working remotely a day a week, multiple remote desktop sessions and data... and the hog of hogs, Netflix . Real world testimonials? What say y'all?

If you don't have Qwest DSL access you are pretty much limited to satellite with one exception: There is a company called Wispertel (might have changed their name to Skybeam) that has decent high speed access with a couple of provisions: 1) You must have line of sight access to one of their towers and 2) you can get a wonky installation that results in frequent outages - like if the wind blows, if it rains or snows or if you don't hold your mouth just so. I have seen their installations either work great or be a massive PIA. In my experience about 75% are fine and about 25% either suck or blow seriously.

Here is a link:

SKYBEAM High-Speed Internet and Digital Phone Services

There is a local forum up here in the Bailey/Pine/Conifer/Evergreen area that is a wealth of information. It also contains a good deal of whiny bitching. Pinecam

I've lived in the area for about 12 years, so if you have any other questions ask away!

Thanks Dan, I also stumbled across Skybeam (the name did change). They sound about on par with the tech guy from Wild Blue who was not really knowledgeable on Skybeam for comparison. I was not really happy with the sales schpiel from WB. Pretty high pressure.

Skybeam is $45/mo for equipment and 5Mbps so a better deal.

Thanks for the info! Will start researching.

I have Skybeam and it works well. Also use their system for VOIP and so far....only a couple of outages in 3 years.

For WB Hulk is your man - at least he can probably provide you some info

I assume you have ruled out Qwest/CenturyLink as an option either by choice or by availabiliy?

Bill, we live in Evergreen and use Comcast cable high speed internet. It's not available everywhere, but it's in our 'hood. Where area are you looking at?

If you can get Comcast, you probably don't want WildBlue service. However, our new satellite launches in August and we'll have 12 Mbps service starting around Nov. 1. It will be worthy of consideration.
