Default Time to Play Name that Bug

OK, my wife was driving through Denver earlier this week when a very large wasp landed on her winshield A Pillar Driver's side. She drove for about 6 blocks with it clinging to the windshield. It finally flew away after hanging on at speeds upwards of 45 mph. She says it was about 5 inches long not including the stinger. All told she estimates it was 6-7 inches in length. Very scary. So, what is it?

A quick Google search of "large wasp" netted this:

Wow, that's amazing you found it so fast. You sure do know your big scary bugs! The Darwin description is chilling, too. I would hate to be stung by this thing that's for sure. Anyone know how common/rare they are here in Colorado?

Been here my entire life and I've never seen or heard of that thing before so I'd say rare but what do I know

If interested you can read more HERE

There are over 60,000 species worldwide, and approximately 3,000 in North America - more than any other Hymenoptera family. The distribution of Ichneumonidae is one of the most notable exceptions to the common latitudinal gradient in species diversity because it shows greater speciation at high latitudes than at low latitudes.[1]

Until you see one of those in person, you will never understand just how big they are! The pictures just don't do them any justice!

The problem with that video is it didn't end with someone smashing the bug with the sole of their shoe. Now it's going to make my skin crawl every time I think about it.
