Incredible shots - I love those big expedition trucks pictured: Kamaz and MAN. I've seen a Swiss expedition vehicle like that in Lajolla, CA one time - it was impressively built.

Very cool. My brother and I once climbed in the Atacama, along one of these routes.

There is a petrified (from the dry, and the cold) cow on the bank of this lake. Very interesting. The race course didn't get off of the road much (if at all), but they were close to the forests of penitentes. Trippy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penitentes

We were VERY familiar with Copiapo. At the time, Sernatur (the Chilean tourist bureau) was really, really pumped to have two gringo visitors there. Their office didn't even have postcards in it! They used to have the Empanada Palace, with ~200 varieties of Empanadas. The truck we hired to haul us up to the mountain: a double cab 89-98 Hilux (with a 3L). Riding in that truck is largely what put the idea in my head to swap the diesel into my truck....
