Default H55f shifter wiggle

I just put a new 5 speed in my 60 and re-used the old shifter from my 4 speed. It shifts well but in 3rd and 4th gears only, I can wiggle the shifter back and forth about 2 inches while in gear. It' not a big deal, but in the other gears, it is nice and snug, with no wiggle. Seems like a bushing may be missing somewere, but I can't see any bushings noted in the FSM. Anybody have any ideas why this would happen and how I might fix it?

mine feels sloppy in 3rd & 4th particularly unless the thing has a load on it. Maybe it is par for the course?

Did you use a new bushing at the bottom of the shifter? It is a little cup that pops off ( I had to cut mine off). the new one pops right on. It is what interfaces with the shift rods in the top cover. They wear out pretty fast i've noticed... mine seem to only last 40k miles or so until they get a little loose.

It does not pop out of gear, just lets me wiggle it back and forth a lot in those gears. Carlton's is nice and snug in all gears.

There is a new ring bushing in the transmission tunnel that the shifter goes into. I have a boot on order from Toyota. I guess when it comes in I will try the new shifter to see if it is any better before I return it.

Default Wiggle

Sascha, check out Marlins site. Transmission: parts and upgrade. Shifter ball seat and socket. I realise that these are not the direct fit parts for your Cruiser 5 speed, but the visual and description may help if Toyota engineered the H55 (top shift) similar to Hi-Lux transmissions. Your description sounds like your seat and/or socket are worn or maybe missing. I have extra's of the white Marlin seat and shift lever socket, if they happen to be the same size, that you are welcome to try. Hope this helps. Dean

Thanks, guys. I'll check that out. It sounds like maybe the new shifter will fix the problem. I'll let you know in a few days when I swap them out.

Put in the new shifter. All better. It has a full nylon bushing on the bottom, where the old one only had a metal tab in front and back. Lesson learned...don't be cheap!

Hey Sascha, did you end up getting a new 5spd shifter for this? I read on some forum (I think Mud) that the 4spd shifter does not work well with the 5spd tranny... I picked up an H-55 for a future project and will need to get a shifter for it and am gathering info..

Thanks

Yes. Definitely go with the H55 shifter. Itwas expensive (newabout $155) but it works right, so it's worth it. The 4 speed shifter I re-used worked OK, but was really sloppyin some of the gears. Is that baby destined for your 40?
