Default New Moto Toy

I probably need this like a hole in the head but anyway here it is . . . a very clean used 2008 Kawasaki KLX450R.

I was debating between this bike and a 2011 KX450R which is a full on fuel injected motocross bike. The KLX is three years older for $2K less. When I test rode them, I immediately stood the KX up on end. The KLX has almost as much power but it doesn't hit as hard. It is carburated and has an FMF pipe and factory headlight and taillight. For this reason, Kawasaki put a slightly stronger electrical system on the KLX . . . and it has an electric start too. I may look into making it street legal for getting from trailhead to trailhead but I'll wait on this. The KLX is often referred to as an enduro bike. If I really enjoy it I may take it a step further and either get a KX450R or a KTM enduro with all the DOT stuff already on it.

Of course, now I have the fun of spending many hundreds of $$$ on safety gear, boots etc.

Nice James. Looks like you got a skid plate and chain guard in the deal as well. You'll have to bring that out on your next trip West and we'll go have some fun. You'll have to ride behind all the KTM's though...

Yes, there are a few extras on it. I want to set it up this weekend and see how the dimensions would work out if carried on a hitch mount on my FJ. I wonder how finicky the jetting would be going from Indiana's 1,000 ft of elevation to 6, 8, 10, or 12,000 ft. That was one of the advantages I was really debating with the fuel injected model. Still confident this is a good starting point as I think I can readily get my money back out of this one when I am ready to move up. In the process of getting setup with all the safety gear right now.

Along with the 2011 KX450R I looked at for $4899, they had a third used bike (another 2011 KX450R) which had over $3000 in aftermarket parts for $5499. The KX450Rs both looked almost like new.

Go on Thumpertalk.com for your jetting. Set it up for 7500-8000' & don't worry about it. Once I finally spent a couple of hours dialing in my 2-stroke I've never changed it & they're way more finicky than the thumpers. On a normal riding day you'll start at 6000' and be at 10k in no time! Once your carb is dialed, spend an afternoon in the rocks on Webster pass dialing in your suspension.

If its anything like a WR vs YZ you could probably change up a few things to get the power output closer to the KX

I don't mind recommendations at all. The only thing I have so far is a helmet. Hoping to order boots, pants, pads etc within the next few days. Dealer offered me 15% off and also gave me a $100 gift certificate. My bike was owned by one of the business partners and the $4899 KX450 was owned by the salesman (also part owner in the business).

Looking a decent starter boots right now and have heard good things about the Italian made Gaerne GX-1 boots and Fox boots. Hear a lot of bad about the low-end Alpinstars but good on the high-end Alpinstars. Ideas ?

Go down and try on boots, really. Too important to have uncomfortable ones. I tried on all of them and nothing was quite right until I found the Gaerne SG-10's. The SG-12's not so much, but the 10's were like butta right away. I'll be buying a new pair when these are done.

I went to a local shop to try on boots and started with the low end ones. They felt like hightop sneakers. I wanted something that would protect my ankles. After working up to the nicest ones they had, Sidi and Gaerne, The Gaerne SG10s were the best fit. They're kinda like putting an ARB locker in your truck: it seems really expensive when you have to put up the money but once you've used it several times, you decide it was totally worth it.
