Default Where to buy steel?

I need to pick up some steel for a project in the near future. Any recommendations on places to buy in either southeast Denver ( I work on Arapahoe and Havana) or northwest (near 20th and wads). Noticed one shop called Altitude Steel at Colfax and i25, so that's on the way home, but not sure what the danger of getting mugged there is Haven't been down in that area before. Willing to pay higher prices if I get to keep my car

My office is just a few blocks from there. It is an industrial part of town but not at all an area that I have safetye concerns with. I've bought some metal (small stuff) there on a couple of occassions and have always had a good expereince.

I love altitude for scraps. they have a monster scrap pile. they have lots of square tubing too. round tubing not so much. They also don't mind little projects. They are super nice.

Then of course we have Hinton Steel. Our good Friend Jim works there and they have lots of round and square tube as well as pretty much anything else you want. I have honestly been going to Hinton a lot more lately, that is unless I want to look through the scrap pile. Hinton has a much greater selection and does pretty good volume discounts.

There is also Den-Col which I've been to on multiple occasions.

Thanks for the info everyone. I acutally ended up ordering an oddball piece of the web. I also stopped by Altitude this morning to browse through their cutoffs. Wow, I'm used to cutoff's being a foot or 2. They've got some huge pieces of steel. I ended up getting a few smaller bits for the project.

X2 on their scrap pile! I did my entire modification to my swing-away tire carrier from their scrap pile. They also had this bucket of little "gussets" (actually just corners of 1/4" plate that were cut off from another project) that worked perfect for gusseting my welds! For the scraps, you just pay by the pound and the more pounds, the cheaper it gets.

They were really nice, too!

There's also a place up in Commerce City up on the north side that has a great scrap selection. I used to go out there quite a bit. Can't think of the name right now though...

Ok, now anyone have recommendations for something far south side? I'm at work (arapahoe and I25) and need to pick up a 3'x2"x0.25" piece of bar stock. I buggered up a project But seems like there is virtually nothing on the far south? Its all steel building sellers. And I can't get to the north side by 4p when altitude closes, since rush hour starts at 2p on Fridays

I consider Hinton south side... I mean, not only is it south of I-70, but heck it's like Evans.. that's like Hampden almost, may as well be Monument at that point.

Call Jim, have him set something aside for you!
