I used wing nuts for mine on my roof rack. Works great. Now if it could be lower......

One other thing that you may consider if you ever build a version 2, is where the weak point is. If by chance you ever test how well your running boards work as sliders, I might be concerned on the damage it could cause to your hinge, body or windshield. Of course you could just snap the bolt that is holding the lift to the car, which would be fine.

Looks good though, I likes me some inspiration to build new things. I might have to come by and test your welder myself.
