Default Leaf Peeping

Since my wife and I are both from the North East... we're no strangers to leaf peeping and the amazing colors of the season. However, we're only a few years into our Colorado lives and kinda new to Aspen peeping. We've been to Ridgway, Silverton, Ouray and Telluride during peak season but only scratched the surface of what there is to see.

I'm looking for some ideas on places to go. Do you have a favorite trail/pass/road that you head to every year? We're planning a trip Oct 1-4 this year, but haven't committed to any particular area yet. We're leaning heavy on going back to the Telluride area because we love it there so much. It will be a family trip with the kids, so I don't want to do anything too intense. Mild wheeling, extreme peeping.

We plan on using points to stay in a nice hotel/lodge each night and picnic during the day. Any suggestions?

We took a trip through RMNP yesterday and there are some leaves just starting to turn. I know we're still 3 weeks or so away from peak, but I can feel it in the air!!

These pics were taken on Fall River Rd with an Iphone 4S right from the drivers seat. No adjustments, just great pics. NY's Catskill Mountains are awesome in the fall, but it's hard to beat Colorado.

arguably the best drive for leaf peeping is Kebler pass CB to kebler to mclure to marble. 2nd is dallas divide

Spent the weekend in Vail and at Piney Lake 12 miles north of Vail. A wedding. Then drove Tenessee Pass to Leadville then Mosquito pass to Fairplay and then home. There are already spotty spectacular spots in the areas mentioned where some big patches of leaves are brilliant colors. Now there is still much left to turn. A couple of articles I read in the local papers point to an early, quick, fast drop for colors this year cuz of heat and no rain.

Looking forward to hearing the report Chris! I hope we're not too late.

We were thinking about doing Mosquito Pass next week. I love all the aspens in the lower part of that trail. I've never been over Tennessee Pass though. Gotta take advantage these next few weeks.

We decided on Telluride again. We'll drive Last Dollar Road then run Clear Lake, Alpine Loop and maybe one more.

If anyone is looking at heading that way, The Hotel Telluride http://www.thehoteltelluride.com/ gave us a super deal after a little persuading. Obviously, this is their off-season. And, they are dog friendly!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

It's on up there, I would say next 2-3 weeks max. I70 is still pretty green but we headed to Leadville after doing the Silver Plume train and it was turning big time, so is Kenosha Pass.

Gorgeous.

Didn't make to the Butte this weekend, as we had hoped...
