Default How to remove C-Clip off end of axle shaft

Okay, so I'm trying to remove the small broken axle shaft in my front diff carrier, but I can get anything inside the hole to spread the c-clip off so I can remove the shaft stub out of the carrier. Any ideas how to get that C-Clip off, so I can remove the shaft from the carrier???

Center the clip on the shaft and gently prybar the end into the spider. I've used heavy duty magnets at that point to pull it through and out. I haven't had to use that trick on an IFS diff yet though

CJ, this is an early IFS diff yes?

If so, the best (easiest) way to do this is to use a piece of scrap metal, and some JB weld, the fast setting stuff.

You adhere the metal to the end of the broken axle, and once it has fully set (IIRC the quick set stuff is 5-10 minutes), you pull the metal and the shaft out. Those clips are next to impossible to remove in-diff. It works best to use a something you can pry off of. On the trail, I used a cheap box wrench with one end cut off to pull a shaft from a guys truck. got my pry bar into the closed end and it popped right out.

I pulled a c-clip and nub out of an 4runner front diff before. I think it was in Moab on Rachel Romer's Runner. I used a couple of small picks to hook it and pull the clip out then used a magnet to slide the nub through the side gear. Sounds simple but I think it took a couple hours and a couple

How did you get to it? IIRC, the true trac is a housed unit (not open spider gears, so no way to get at the back end of the axle), but I recall Rachel's 4runner had an ARB in the front.

How did you get the picks into the actual unit?

Through the side gear splines and axle shaft opening. It was a PITA.
