Default Replace the NAV

I thought this was pretty interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0o1zkqEuec

I bet a handy person could develop a way to recess the factory NAV unit back into the dash an inch or so, then make a flip up mechanism to mount one of these in front of the factory unit. Maybe you don't even have to do that though. You might be able to buy a spare trim ring, and then fiberglass something right onto the top. Not exactly this idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmbh7eAYL8k but that's one approach I guess. About the only thing I would still have to access on the orginal nav, would be the climate control interface, and even then, only once per start or so. If it was easy enough to flip the tablet out of the way, it would be no big deal, and you could still take the tablet inside when you leave the truck. Bam.

That's sweet. I'd like to use an iPad mini in my truck. We have lots of apple products already and it'd be sweet to interconnect all our smart devices.

Yeah, I was digging through even more youtubes of others that have done it, and now I'm thinking of how to make a cradle in the 40. That's much easier to do, and since I don't have a headunit at all, that would be perfect. Pull in to park, and slip that out and drop it inside the tuffy. I might just have to pull the trigger on the $200 Nexus and an arm mount for the 40 this week.

But...I will need to crack my iphone to really take advantage of it. More research to come....

It's super cool. My friends wife bought 3 after I showed it to them. Or will be trying to buy 3 anyway.

I borrowed my brother's Nexus 7 and held it up to the dash. Fits perfectly in the late 100's for what I would want. At some point, I need to pop the dash bezel and see what's behind there about an inch either side of the screen. With any luck, you could mount the custom "hinges" right to the mounting points on the MFU and just have something poke through to attach to the nexus. Next step, will be buying one cheap and figuring out how to tether it to my iphone....

Has anyone found a local source for Steelie mounts? I know they are made in Boulder, but I thought you had to order them online. They look frickin' awesome.

Yeah.

http://www.niteize-innovation.com/Steelie/

NiteIze is local, and they have major distribution channels. Sports Authority, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, you name it.

In fact, Niteize is about 1 mile from where I am three days a week. I'll swing by and see if they have one I can play with and/or buy there. Will post up results.

Swung by on the way home and asked to demo one. They are pretty sweet. The magnet action works very well, and it appears would hold the device in place on even a bumpy road. I actually like the "tower" one, as it's sturdy and long enough that it would probably work better for our trucks. I think you could drill two holes in the bottom and screw it in more securely than the adhesive that comes with it. Avoid the rubber ball handle, seemed a bit cheesy, but the other two, the dash mount and the pedestal, seem well made.

Funny thing, as I got in the 40 to pull away, the owner of NiteIze rolled up and parked in front of me....in his charcoal 200 cruiser.
