Default Idaho Springs Tunnel

Wasn't sure if this should go into chat or event planning but here it is since the trek to Moab begins soon for many of us...
We drove to Santa Fe, NM, this past week and went the 285 route on the way down. Came back yesterday via Leadville and then I-70 the rest of the way home. OMG! This was our first exposure to the work being done at the twin tunnels just east of Idaho Springs and it wasn't pretty at 6 pm. East bound on a Sunday afternoon can be a traffic pain but wasn't too bad but west bound was an unbelievable parking lot. Stop and go back ups all the way to the top of Floyd Hill with traffic barely moving at the entrance to the tunnel. Sunday evening west bound on I-70 is usually really light and I imagine that during a weekday it will only be heavier. If that is the case, add an hour or even longer to your trip plans for getting from Denver to Moab in the near future. Ugh.

Interesting, thanks for the heads up! Not too many bypasses either...

Kingston Peak would be one, just need to get a set of tracks first!

That's my daily commute starting again in May. Hope it won't be as bad at 6:30 in the morning. I'll probably be taking squaw pass some too.

Take the last exit before descending down the hill to the mine. Can't remember the exit. Quick right, then left. At the tee intersection go left. It'll save an hour

It is pretty bad, we ran east a few weeks ago right after it started. It wasn't a bad drive and we moved at 30mph the whole way, and that was with skier traffic on a Monday afternoon. The west bound was terrible but that was also the day that the power lines were on the highway. We felt so bad for those drivers.

So question is what time do you leave Denver and what time do you leave Moab?

Thanks, Matt. That should be a help to those of us heading west any time soon! If CDOT sticks to its schedule.
