Default $2500 Car Needed

Nephew in KC needs a daily driver and he has $2500. I'm not there to help and he's not a car guy so any suggestions on a starting point will be appreciated. He knows about rust being a deal killer but not much else on what to look for.

Steve,

check CL for early mid 90's civics (unmolested of course) and smaller toyotas, like a celica or tercel. They are out there, and move FAST. If they'd had reasonable maintenance they can usually be had in that range and will run for a long time

avoid anything thats been modded, most are done by young kids that don't know how to do it right.

I also like the early 90s 4runners from 91-95. I've seen quite a few of those in the $2-4k range that look pretty nice. Also for a lot of cars in the $3-4k range asking price, the people selling will often take an offer for a good bit less when you show up with cash and don't give them a hard time. My sister was just selling her old Hyundai Elantra for about $3k which was way under book and had all kinds of recent mechanic work done to it (tbelt, water pump, radiator) and some people would show up and say "ya I like it but I want to have it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic and then we'll talk price". When you're selling a car for less than $5k it ain't gonna be perfect and IMO it just pisses off the person selling to have that attitude. I'd just show up and instead of beating them up just say hey I know this car is 15 years old and has some miles on it so it will need a little work and I can give you $2.5k right now on the spot. It works better than haggling and you can often get a really good deal that way. I had owned 25 cars by the time I was 24 (was buying and selling to make extra $$ in college), and that method worked great for me and rarely makes anyone mad.

If he's not a car guy, then my advice would be to avoid German cars. They cost a boatload to fix, and they develop weird problems that can be costly. Don't buy a VW, Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

One car that might be a good one to suggest: the Geo/Chevy Prizm. This was a rebadged Toyota Corolla that GM sold for a while. It's reliability record was even better than the Corolla itself for a few years, oddly enough. They are great little cars that run forever and never seem to need repairs.

x2 on what Hulk said. Old German cars are great to drive, but a challenge to keep on the road. OTOH, you can't go wrong with an old Camry. 94 and up are great on the road and run forever. Corollas and Civics are too small and suck on the highway.

Hopefully, nephew's interest in Old World cars abated after his Disco disaster as chronicled here a couple of years ago.
Interesting to know that Toyota supplied GM with product. Best cars GM ever sold!

I'll sell my ls400 for 3,000.00
It's a hell of a deal because inhave literally replaced almost every maintence item with in the last 3 months trying to fix a misfire.
Misfire is fixed !

New timing belt (Toyota)
New water pump (Toyota)
New Mass Air Flow sensor
New denso spark plugs
New distribution caps (2x)
New distribution rotors (2x)
New ignition coils (2x)
New NGK ignition wires.
1 new catalitic converter
2x new fuel injectors
New upper intake manifold.
New 5% tinted windows all the way around.
Power everything. And it all works flawlessly.
The leather interior is near perfect. Extreamlly clean no rips at all
No cracks.

I'm in Florida now for work, and aquifer another Lexus and don't need two.
So if I can sell the one in Colorado, I won't have to move it.
