Default Road Salt

Why is CO the only western state using Ice Slicer (which I presume is the awful mag chloride):

Interesting. Being from the northeast, i think that straight rock salt is probably worse for corrision. My previous 2000 4Runner spent almost all its lift in New England and the road salt absolutely destroyed it. I sold it and bought my current 97 4Runner which is a CO truck and it looked brand new compared to the 2000.

Here's a page that talks about the various de-icers used in Colorado:

http://www.coloradodot.info/travel/w.../products.html

It looks like the mag-chloride is available in both liquid and solid forms. I was surpised that the liquid form only goes down to 16F.

From the map you linked to - There is a pretty wide range of prices for straight rock salt. The price doesn't appear to have anything to do with the volume of salt used. Either some states have some lousy buyers or there are lots of flavors of rock salt. There is no mention of liquid de-icers on the map.

I really dislike mag-chloride.

Part of the reason CDOT can't use rock salt, cinders and sand in the winter is when it gets ground up under car tires it leaves particulate in the air and makes the brown cloud worse.
