Default FJ 40 tow rig progress

Some of you guys know that I started building a 64 Napco Chevy truck in December. Well, after 9 months of grinding, welding, filling and sanding the body and scrape/paint & rebuild on the frame, I finally got some color shot today. Long day in a hot booth but it came out really nice.
Once I have this on the road, I can turn my time and money back to my FJ 40 motorvation issue!

Having never done much body work, I must say I'm pretty impressed with how it came out. There is no trace of the door handles at all and I built a rear roll pan that came out pretty sweet too.
I've also never torn apart an engine before but I went for it, added a big cam, intake, 4 barrel....god I hope it runs!
Now, on to wiring!

What a great looking truck! Did you spray the paint yourself with that shaky hand of yours?

Wow, looks great! Did you rent a spray booth to shoot the paint?

I left the actual spray to my buddy, who paints cars for a living and I rented his booth at work for a Sunday spray.
After so many hours on the body, I didn't trust myself to get a good paint job. The paint was also very expensive and needs to be baked to set and harden. The clear is called 'European glamour' clear and it goes on like syrup....again, needs to be baked to set.
So, shaky hands are good for sanding....not so good for painting, Sasha!
And thanks, I am very pleased with the results.

The history on this one has been a bit hard to track and follow. It has all the napco bits; their divorced transfer case, 6 lug axles, park brake set up, etc. I have a old client that used to work for Chevy on the truck line way back in the day, and he says its a napco....yet all the info I can find shows this model year was post Napco.
Further history shows this truck was owned by the railroad and had outriggers on it for RR track use.
We suspect that may have had something to do with it, perhaps they continued to modify these for fleet service use? Perhaps my elderly client is in error too.
Still a bit of a mystery to me and I had no idea what I had until my client took a look and filed me in on what I do know. I can't track the vin because the cab that was on it was a total loss (rust) so I got another one, cleaned it up and threw it, and its vin onto the chassis.
Marco, it has been a long 9 months prep! My wife was sick of primer dust, I was sick of sanding/filling/sanding, neighbors were sick of the dust, noise and having to help me lift things on and off for mock up.....yes, huge relief that the body/paint part is over! Now, I have to put it all together again.....the fun stuff!

Mitch, you are an inspiration. Someday I hope to find a Willys pickup to restore...with modern guts though. What a fun project you are into with this truck. That's the difference between a game and a project...the hard work that goes into it. Keep on truckin' !!
