Default Overland Expo 2014 - May 15-19

A long time ago I put Overland Expo 2014 on my calendar with a reminder for January.

The event is Friday May 16 through Sunday May 19, in Flagstaff AZ

We'll convoy down, details to be determined, but depending on the will of the group we could do an overland route getting there. The most direct routes goes through Moab or Durango. Albuquerque is an option.

We'll camp onsite as a group. Ticket options include day passes or the "Overland Experience packages." I'll gather more information and post here.

I have never been, so if you have or are already planning to go, also post up!

Ahh the Expo… I would do a day pass if I were considering a return visit. I think you could take in the essence of the event with a couple nights camping and one day pass. My experience was that it was kind of spendy for the value.

Robbie and I went to the first one back in 2009. Pretty cool to see all the vendors and interesting builds. The highlight for me was, standing in a circle listening to Tom Collins, Bill Burke, Robbie and Scott talk about Camel Trophy stuff, recent adventures, Trail Teams interaction, etc.. I was in awe of standing with some real life heroes of my new hobby.

Graham Jackson, one of the Overland Trainers and contributor to OJ, was very nice and friendly. I attended his presentation on GPS tracking.. It was more of an intro to what a full GPS class would be if you signed up for Overland Training. So a bit of a teaser.. Tom Collins had an essential gear seminar that was really cool. All he needs is a pelican case… Clearly I did not take head his appeal to minimalism.. But it makes you wonder.. Do I really need all this crap...

The camping with other vehicles was super fun. It looks as though the camping has improved over the years and could be fun to do again.

I signed up for the entire event in 2009, attended a few seminars but did not do the driving stuff because I already had a ton of one on one training that previous summer with Robbie/Woody and other events.

I have some pics posted on my smugmug from that year..

If you had the time, it would be fun to try to get there say from Grand Junction to the event on as much dirt road, as possible.. That would be a fun thing to try and a good conversation over a camp fire in the parking lot of the event.

I've always wanted to go, but my 40 and trailer would slow the group down considerably. I don't know if this is my year or not. If there is a lot of interest it might sway me to go. I think Jacket won like coolest guy at the event one year...

Wow. That looks really cool. I will have to see if that will work, but it sure looks like fun.

Code for: Camp will be all set up for you when you arrive.

May have to borrow a Rising Sun banner for this one.

I like Chris' idea! The trip down could possibly be as much fun as the event! Leave mid-day Thursday, drive fun route, take in the event Saturday and bolt home afterwards...

If we could all swing it, probably be at least 3 trailers in this group + other rigs...so not traveling too fast...believe me a 6,000lb + FJ80 and a trailer can move rather sslowly...especially uphill.

Or leave Wednesday and have Friday and Saturday at the event. Its an easy 2 day jaunt. Especially for a Diesel FJ80.

I'll get route planning.
