Default Price check/Tacoma advice?

I am looking at a 95 Tacoma w/ 2.4l, 5 speed as a first vehicle for my 16 y.o. The truck has 225K on the clock and is currently throwing a P0420 code; current owner says it just needs a new catalytic converter.

The mileage and age of the vehicle seem high for a price point of $4700; but in the looking around I have done, these yotas are pricey.

Thoughts from people who know would be greatly appreciated!

they are ridiculously pricey...with those miles I'd expect a TRD V6 ext cab not a 4 cyl

still a great truck, I personally think about 2 grand high with a 4 cyl

aside from that what else is it? 4x4? reg or ext cab?

It is extended cab, 4x4, new tires, clutch recently done, Toyota bedliner
A/C, cruise control, pioneer iPod, cd player

NADA puts it's value at $3,600 clean retail; KBB says $4,700 good condition $4,200 fair condition.

The upsides for me are the 4 cylinder will be easier for the 16 y.o. to feed gas, plus I don't want something that he can go too fast in; 4wd is a must living in Conifer, Toyota's reputation for running to high mileage. The downsides are age and miles on the clock already. $5K was about the upper end of what I wanted to spend. Also am considering a Ford Ranger for him, but that price point with a ranger puts him in a vehicle with 120,000ish miles. My choices seem to be coming down to Ranger with 120-140 or toyota with 220+.

Look up the Toyota price for the Cat and show the seller that number, if you could get at least that much off you might be in the ballpark. Remember that colorado law requires the vehicle to pass emissions when sold and this one will not so you should be in a good negotiating point. Offer ~$3k and start walking maybe?

Also recall that the frame warranty is up on that one so that is something you want to look at very carefully before you buy and may be another negotiating point.

I have a 2001 with a 2.7 and 115k-mi, nice suspension, and a superbad sound system but I wouldn't expect more than about $5.5k for it (but I'm not selling ).

Good point, aren't all the 'Tacoma' 4x4's (1995.5 - 2004) running the 2.7 or 3.4 and the mini trucks and 2x4's being the only 2.4 motors?

This sounds like it could be a pre-taco mini truck, nice truck but not the redesigned 'tacoma'.

Sometimes the 1989-1995 trucks come up as a Tacoma, depends on what vehicle database the information is being pulled from. If memory serves Discount calls my '91 a Tacoma.

It's possible for it to be a 2.4L 2RZ-FE but I think that would be a 2WD Tacoma as I think all 4wd Tacos got the 2.7L 3RZ-FE. It's easy to tell if we're talking about a 22R-E or 2RZ-FE. Which side is the exhaust on? Driver's it's a 22R, passenger's it's a 2RZ or 3RZ.

I suspect it's a 2RZ, if it's actually a 2.4L, because P0420 is an OBD-II code and the 22R-E never had an ECU with OBD-II.

Our recently sold Taco (with a 3.4L V6) threw this code right after I bought it and the dealer said it needed a catalytic converter, too. But one reason these trucks throw this code is by using 85 octane gas. I started using mid grade and it never threw the code again in the 10,000 miles we owned it.

BTW, we sold it through Craigslist for straight NADA if it gives you any direction as to real pricing. I had 4 serious look/inquires and 3 offers to buy.

Yeah, I think Dave is right. If its a 2.4L then its unlikely to be a 4x4 tacoma, but rather the "Pickup", of the previous generation. I won't swear to it, but I'm 99% sure that 4x4 Tacomas all had a 2.7L 3RZ, not the 2.4 2RZ.

And, I think that price is way too high. But thats just me. I'd pay that for a late 90's early 2000's 4runner with those miles, but not a 4 cyl Pickup.

And, the guy has to give you a clean emissions ticket, as stated. If it needs a cat, he's going to have to replace that.

Get the emissions test from the seller, definitely. I suspect it's unlikely it actually needs a cat but the e-test will tell you for sure one way or the other. Like I said, our Taco threw this code early on and it passed the e-test I got when I sold it by the fast track criteria, it was super clean. It was either the octane thing I think since I didn't do much else other than drive it, changed the air filter, change the oil.
