Default Recovery night - what do you want to cover?

Hey folks,

I'm starting to put together the materials for our Recovery Night meeting this year (April 2nd). Yes we're at Stevenson again on March 5th...

What do you want to cover? Given that this year we're only doing this for one meeting instead of two, I'm rolling Hi-Lift Jacks into the fold.. so feel free to call April Jack-It night, if that pleases you. I'm calling it recovery night.

Anyway, borrowing from last year's material our potential topics are:

- Hi Lift jacks- maintenance, use, storage.
- Spotting - basic hand signals, best practices
- Winching - basic tools, operation, best practices

Some new thoughts I had are:

- Vehicle prep - tires (air pressure), tools, spares, recovery points, etc.
- Fire extinguisher training (I think I could come up with 4 or 5 we could actually discharge).
- How to recover a rolled vehicle
- ????

So post up please... particularly if there's one area of interest you wish you knew a little more about and would like to join a discussion about. And better still, please post up if you're willing to lead one of these discussions.. I am willing to lead any one of the above (a little light on my rolled vehicle experience but I've got a month to work that in ) but I can only lead one topic, so I need your help with the others. We can have any number of topics, again whatever our meeting attendees would like.

Looking forward to your comments/ideas, thanks. I will also mention this tomorrow night at our March meeting.

I'm out. Thursday April 3rd I will be on my way to Moab for TLT and I thought this was about hangovers.

For that recovery, just have the skinny guy push with his fingertips. Works every time.

I like your thoughts and line up for the demonstations, as were done last year, Tim! I am bringing my boys in April,( ages 17 and 14) to help get them get edjamacated on these finer details and nuances, as they begin their off roading experiences! I too, am more in a learning mode, as of yet, so I look forward to everyone's experiences and insights, and look forward to helping teach them in the future!

Tim, what about how to build your own recovery kit? A list of necessities and also a list of nice to haves?

I agree with you that he meant April 2. Just poking fun.

Default shelf road/ditch with two wheels on decline

I've been there...in my 40, and seen it many times. I'd love to learn the recovery thoughts with two wheels on the road, two off...by the width of a tire. but loose ground and steep incline make it precarious. These pics don't do the ditch, angle and loose gravel justice.

I've been trying to make it to my first meeting all winter and was about to make the drive today but this sounds like a better one to attend. It's just been a little hard to get there all the way from Aspen. If it's for sure on the 2nd of April I'll put it on my calender.

I will not be present but, how to rig a Hi-Lift for "winching" would be a good topic and cover and come-a-longs with that? If it was not done last year.

I can say from experience, do a couple winching sessions with your Hi-Lift and you'll be at the shop buying a winch real quick. But it does work.

I like Shawn's idea, and also in looking at Daniel's picture it could be nice to cover a scenario like how to recover a flop. Part of the fun would be picking someone's rig to rollover in the parking lot...

Edit: Now that I read Tim's original post, looks like flop recovery was already suggested. Good idea
