Default 15th Annual Father's Day Spring Creek

Quote of the day, Tim Nakari:

"This is the last time this wagon is going to see this trail."

Stan, I stand corrected. A 100 CAN do this trail.

There were just 3 of us, Paul Larger in his 80, with Barry McCoin riding shotgun with him, Tim in his 100 with his kids Gavin and Violet, and I in Charlotte, my 1971 FJ40. The paint helps to hold the rust together.

The weather was gorgeous, not too hot, not too cold, no rain or snow and very little trail traffic. We made great time until we got to the rocky climb where you have to turn sharp left and go up the rocky hill. It was much tougher this year than any previous year.

These were from the first little shelf obstacle. As always, it's a preview of the rest of the trail.

We didn't take any pictures on the dirt hill, and all three of us made it up uneventfully. The rocky hill was another story. Paul (I think?) got some video of me driving up. He didn't term it "driving" he said I was "launching". Bottom line, I made it up under my own power after a little backing up and trying various lines with increasing skinny pedal. OK, pedal to the metal skinny pedal.

One of the reverse moves took out my left tail light and smashed my tailpipe up against my tire. A little farther up, I did some...um..rearranging of the driver's side running board.

Okay, I smashed it. There I said it.

Thank you Tim for taking these pictures!

Tim was (rightfully so) more careful with his approach.

On that last picture he was pretty happy with his progress. Until it kind of went downhill with all the weight going onto things that weren't tires.

Paul did a little better, but still needed his front locker.

The worst section of the rock garden was way easy this year. I didn't know it and took the bypass to show Tim and Paul the bypass, but it looked like someone had taken a loader and filled in a bunch of dirt around the biggest rocks in the middle of the garden.

Just above the rock garden, Tim tore the inside sidewall of his tire.

Even with the lengthy machinations at the rock hill and with the flat tire, we made it to the top meadow at around 1:30 or so and had lunch up there. We took a (relatively) new route down and ended up near mile marker 5 on CO 103 between West Chicago Creek and Idaho Springs. Huge thanks to Tim for his huge GPS on his iPad mini!
