Default Anyone familiar with L.A. / Longbeach area?

All, my plans to spend 6 months driving around south america are moving forward. Next step will be to deliver my Cruiser to the loaders in Rancho Dominguez, CA 90220. (Just north of longbeach, a bit south of Compton as far as I can tell).

As far as I understand it I basically have about a 24hr window to drop the car off, so basically 1 business day. I could use some help on developing a plan of approach

One thought I had was to do one long day driving and spend the night in or near vegas. Then wake up super early the next morning, and drive the 5 hrs or so into longbeach, deliver the car, rent another car, turn around and drive back to vegas to spend the night. Just not sure about traffic going into LA at any time of day?

Another thought was to take a few days driving, and camp in the Angeles or San Bernadino National Forest, and then wake up early and drive a shorter distance into the city.

Third option i've considered is to take 2 days driving, and try to find a reasonably priced hotel near Rancho Domingo and deliver the car in the morning. Just not sure what areas are considered safe for both me and the car. Don't want a car-jacking day before I am supposed to put it on a boat!

Any thoughts?

Corey

I think the only thing I wouldn't do is drive back and forth to Vegas. Traffic is always a nightmare and people are nuts.

As for safe places, the closer you are to the beach the better.

What he said. I wouldn't do that drive from LA to Vegas again unless I had no other options. I at least did it late at night and didn't even arrive in Vegas until close to 11pm. Drivers were still nuts and traffic was still tight getting out of LA.

In South OC close to Boyd. Cajon Pass has some constructon right now on I-15 (between Victorville and San Bernardino). Don't know how long it's supposed to last. Only absolutely HORRIBLE traffic to/from Vegas is Friday headed to and Sunday coming back from Vegas. Any other time, you'll be ok.
Typical rush hour traffic everywhere morning and evening. If you planned to hit the LA area after 9 am you'd be fine.
I wouldn't personally stay anywhere near the docks, Compton, etc. Midweek camping in the Angeles Nat'l Forest area is probably doable. Forget about weekends. Way, Way to crowded!
Vegas into LA dock area w/o traffic is a good 5 hour drive.
If you really, really wanted to iron butt it past Vegas close to LA get down the pass into Ontario/San Bernardino area, spend the night there and then drive on into town after rush hour.

Thanks for the info everyone, it is very much appreciated. Still have yet to finalize the plans but will probably try to do the drive in from Vegas to LA early on a Monday morning (or possibly stay in a good part of LA Sunday night.

More info to follow as I wrap up truck projects and focus more on how I'm getting to LA

Thanks for the feedback all, got the truck dropped off yesterday morning without any issues. Stayed the first night in Green River, second night spend in a cheap hotel (due to sun night prices) at Primm, then left about 6:15am mon morning and drove into town. Traffic wasn't really that bad at all. Went 210->605->60->710 and had no problems. Neighborhood was just fine actually, not sketchy at all. Dropped my car full of stuff and the keys at a warehouse and hope it shows up in Chile in 6 weeks

Thanks again!

Corey
