Default Identifying user-created trails under the OHV Rule

At the meeting last night I talked a bit about how important it is to identify (using GPS coordinates) all trails currently in use in the national forests. Below is an ARRA article detailing that importance.

I hope to keep this thread updated with information on trail identification as I have it.

Thank you Bill! Very handy! Maybe to stoke the fire a tad we should challenge other clubs to see which club can come up with the most coordinates!

Here is the USFS site regarding the new travel rule:

Toward the bottom is a link on gathering route information.

Dear BRC Action Alert Subscriber,

Attention All Recreationists!

National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) has just emailed us their press release on the Instructional GPS Trail Mapping DVD which is now available. This is an outstanding tool to help riders and land managers save their favorite Forest Service trails during the Motorized Vehicle Route Designation process.

This DVD was developed jointly by the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC), the Colorado Off-Highway Vehicle Coalition (COHVCO) and the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) with input from the USDA Forest Service (USFS), BlueRibbon Coalition, Americans for Responsible Recreational Access (ARRA), American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA) and the United Four-Wheel Drive Association (UFWDA).

To read NOHVCC's Press Release or order your copy click the following link. http://www.nohvcc.org/IMAGES/prgps.asp. For more on the upcoming Route Designation workshops visit their Forest Service OHV Route Designation Page at http://www.nohvcc.org/forest/forest.asp.

Default Another letter writing opportunity- 'Tis the Season (for grants)

From Jerry Abboud:

From: Jerry Abboud <g.abboud@comcast.net>

Dear COHVCO Members,

The Coalition is requesting a grant from the Off-highway Vehicle Program to educate and inform the OHV community on the implementation of the Federal Travel Management Rule in Colorado(TMR). The Rule involves the process of designation of motorized roads and trails on a national basis on all National Forest Service lands. It is an effort that is driven by both the need to create a designated system of roads and trails to minimize unnecessary routes and to develop collaboration between the agency and the public therefore acknowledging and facilitating the public's need to provide valuable input to create quality user friendly opportunities. COHVCO's Board of Directors plans a grant that will allow for information on the TMR to be distributed throughout the state, particularly to benefit the 100,000 plus OHV registrants whom this directly affects and the tens of thousands of 4wd enthusiasts. In some cases it may even affect designated snowmobile route should travel management planning include winter recreation.

Travel Management Planning involves both the TMR and the NEPA process, therefore in order to provide the appropriate information and have productive collaboration, COHVCO seeks a statewide educational approach to create an understanding of the laws' impact on motorized recreation now and in the future. Because of the complexity of the Rule and the Planning process, it is imperative that the public understand this paradigm shift in the management of public lands. Creation of workshops, face-to-face field work and materials including audio/video resources are planned.

We need letters of support for our grant from clubs around the state and the Forest Service. They should clearly sate the need for broad distribution of this material and a great need to understand it in order to collaborate effectively. Please mail these to: Jerry Abboud, 13670 Cherry Way, Thornton, CO 80602 so they are received no later than 11/28/06 if possible. However, letters may be submitted after that date if it is otherwise impossible to meet the November date; the absolute final is to have them to me by December 9, 2006.

The name of the grant is the Travel Management Rule Collaboration Grant. While it is to be mailed to my address above it should be addressed as follows on the letterhead:

OHV Subcommittee
OHV Grant Program
Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation
1313 Sherman Street Rm618
Denver, CO 80203

Please act now. We need your help to help you with this huge task before us.

Sincerely,
Jerry Abboud
Executive Director
