Default McMaster-Carr Warning Rant

So as an engineer and hobbyist, I've been using McMaster-Carr for a long time. I think they have the most well thought out website in their industry and they have solid models of darn near everything. They are a great company to deal with and up until now.

I'm not going to go into how complicated they are making it for me and my company to order items, but rest assured it will be a PITA.

I have worked 8+mo on a design using a lot of their specific P/N's. If you are familiar with MMC you know that it is a pain to get them to disclose specific brands they sell, you pretty much have to order a part to find out.

In the past 5 months I've probably spent 10-12k with them and was preparing to spend about another 60k over the coarse of the next 2 weeks due to reaching that phase in the design.

Throughout my career as an engineer I have probably spent in excess of 180k with them.

I received this email from them today after purchasing items for my company for the past 5mo.

"Hi Jackson,

Thank you for sending us your January 28th order, but we cannot accept it.

Due to prohibitions under U.S. federal law, McMaster-Carr does not accept purchases from businesses engaged in the production, sale, or distribution of marijuana.

Andrew"

No idea how they figured this out and after a conversation. it looks like anyone who is attempting to do bis with any MMJ or RMJ facilities will be removed from their system.

Mostly it is dumb on their end and a PITA on my end. My heart will go on

-End of Rant

Don't blame McMaster for this, blame the ridiculous laws. They are based in Chicago, have warehouses in L.A. and do business all over. Their lawyers are do doubt telling them the ambiguity of Federal and state law would be a problem if anyone ever looked into it. I just wonder if they're going to stop doing business with anyone in Colorado or Washington. That would truly bring the suck, they have a lot of unique stuff under one roof. Although AFAIK the place I work also won't work directly with medicinal or recreational businesses either and we're wholly owned and operated within the state. It seems to be a chain of banking as much as anything. Banks won't accept money involved in what the Feds still consider illicit activity and doing so would be a risk of audit or worse.

There are plenty of other companies out there that have not chosen to do this (and there are plenty of companies that are doing the same). I know, I'm dealing with many other national companies. Guess it's just another challange when you are blazing new trail.

Based on the conversation I had, they are going to start shutting accounts down and ask question later if they think you are in any way associated.

Just sucks, especially after already doing bus for 5mo. What sucks more is that any orders placed with my name, my companies name, or any of the credit cards on file will be rejected. So i'm kind of hosed as an individual as well.

Still blaming them.

just figured it out...my new email address. They must have looked up the business based off of the back end of my address. Got complacent when emailing a sales person there about 2weeks ago.

Easy enough to get around. Have a friend set up a Hardware, LLC and run all the orders through him. Make up a real website for it and everything...who knows, you do enough business, he could take 20% and actually make decent money off it.

I'm confused? You engineer stuff, and they think you are a dispensary? What gives?
