Default CBs and CB Antennas

Don't know anything about them really I am assuming having a CB in Moab would be a good thing so if I can I'll install one before the trip.

I've done the obligatory searches here and on MUD and determined that the small Uniden or Radio Shack CB that will slot in the ashtray should suffice for my needs, but not sure what to go with antenna wise.

Searches didn't really reveal much other than a link to firestik.com among others.

Any suggestions? Manufacturer and size/length?

TIA

You'll probably be a little happier with a better CB radio than not. A Cobra radio and a Wilson antenna are some of the better ones. I've got a Wilson mag-mount I was real happy with on my pig.

I like these guys for a place to buy equipment, but I'm sure some of the truck stops have stuff, too.

Camelot Communications LTD

Eventually you'll want a 2 meter radio, also.

Default I've always used RS stuff.

I've been using RS Cb's for a longtime. For my uses, they are inexpensive and work just fine. In fact, I've had the same CB and Mag-mount antenna (both RS) in my 60 for like, well, 20 years. They work great.

I think the key is to mount the antenna with a decent ground plane, and make sure the SWR is set properly. I have a meter if anyone wants to borrow it.

I can let you know what model I got when I get home. It's a unit with an integrated speaker and weather bands, and RF gain. mid-low-end model.

I bought my stuff at the flying J truck stop. They seemed to be cheaper than anywhere else and I got the little cobra one for $35.

Your antenna depends on what you are doing.

If you want to install an antenna on your front ARB bumper. You could use a foldover (buy connector at Camelot or the Radio place in sheridan *Name?) or order on line. I use to run this on the 80 and still do on Sraha and Rachels trucks.

With this type of mount you want a 3Ft ant as that what fits folded over so it does not stick out.

I then swapped my ant to me slee bumper. I run a 2Ft ant until I go on a run and then switch to a 4Ft.

Taking your CB to Camelot and having it tuned will increase your range.

A 3Ft or 4Ft ant will work for Moab on trail runs. You will find it very useful. You can't hear the leaders or anyone else during the whole run without it.

Thanks all! I think I'll go with a 4' for now, mounted in the rear and see how that works.

Shawn, if I get this going maybe we can hook up to do the meter thing before Moab...If not maybe I'll try to run over to Camelot.

If the 4ft doesn't fit in the garage, get a 2ft to use when not on runs so the mount doesn't rust and you can use it when you weren't expecting to.

Unless you park on the street

I've used these guys a couple times http://www.gijoesradioelectronics.com/ prices seem good and they deliver fast. I'd recomend magnetic antena for ease and stock look when you want it. 4' firestick if you want better reception. If you go firestick remember you need coax cable and mounting hardware. Either way get one before Moab. Otherwise you'll always wonder "why aren't we moving" also guy with no CB buys the beer.

If you are still looking. I would get a Wilson with a tunable tip... easy as pie! These guys know their junk and their service was outstanding!
