Well, I spoke with Bobby Long today, and his axles won't work. They don't have the long spline on the inside for the locker gear.. good thing I thought to ask! I guess everyone who upgrades to Longfield axles has an ARB?

So I'm going to call Marlin tomorrow. Anyone know of another option?

Have them made. That's what we did on rovers to run dana 60 and yota hybrids.

Tim just run the chromo from bobby and stock axles. I have not seen a stock axle brake in front. Except I think christo with his 39.5 tires. It should be a good combo. Order them form dan and I am sure the price is good. later robbie

Heh. With the reverse cut front 8", I broke my carrier before the axles or birfs let go. But then that was the "2 pinion" open version rather than the "4 pinion" locker version. The Aussies told me the the 4 pinion was a lot stronger. But few would argue that when you upgrade one component, you simply move the breakage to the next weaker component.

I was chatting with Jerry Nichols, and he was building a rig for a customer with chromoly axles and longfields, but warn locking hubs. I was astonisished until I heard the reasoning, that the hubs become the "fuse" and since they are so accessible they are much easier to fix in the field. Made sense to me.

Ok, but again I don't want to upgrade my birfields.. too much $$, just the axles. All I need to do is resolve my "axle groove" issue, and since replacing the inner axles is assumed to be the same cost as getting the existing ones machined and sleeved, and perhaps a little stronger, then it makes sense to me that I may as well upgrade them to chromoly, since the cost is about the same. I'd rather not buy brand new stock axles for what chromoloy ones would have cost, but it looks like that may be my only option if Marlin doesn't have any good news for me tomorrow.

Jeff I've heard the same "fusible link" argument before, I think it's a good one. Lots easier to fix when you don't have to pull that spindle (and the mess behind it) off on a trail. Hope I never learn that first hand, but we'll see..

Ok, Marlin Crawler does not carry Chromoly axles for the 80 series. They suggest trying CV Unlimited.

call moser. they will make them for you, and surpisingly inexpensive.

At worst, you might have to send them a stocker. which they will return.
