Default NY Times: Surge in Off-Roading Stirs Dust and Debate in West

It's an excellent story. It focuses on ATVs and motorcycles, but the issues are all ours.

The 7 minute video is worth watching as well. Plus, there are some Cruisers in it! Anyone recognize these trucks?

FYI: The article mostly focuses on the West. The video is all about Utah in particular.

Not a bad article overall, but it never examines a blatant contradiction: that SUWA bemoans allowing the trails in roadless areas that will prevent these areas from being considered as wilderness.

Hello? The trails are there NOW. The debate is merely over inventorying them. Have we not been concerned that ultragreen groups will try to make 'Roadless' synonymous with 'Wilderness'? If SUWA had their way, these lands would most definitely be closed off to us, even though they have LOTS of 'roads' and trails in them.

I think the rest of the article fairly points out the tension between recreational and environmental concerns though! I also appreciate that they fairly present responsible users, not always something to expect of the Gray Lady.
