Default Help me pick a rental vehicle

If you were going to spend a week cruising around a certain popular Central American country with your wife and two daughters, which of the following vehicles would you choose?

A. "Toyota Hard Top" I think its a BJ or HJ 70, manual tranny, diesel, leaf sprung, small but cool.

B. 3 door Prado. Probably a manual tranny, diesel, coil sprung - better ride on nasty roads than the 70

C. 5 door Prado. Similar to the 3 door but more room.

I like the 70 but the extra space and better ride might trump the cool factor. Whatdya think?*

How do you know your 70 series won't look like this?

5 door prado. They are cool. Similar to one that is in the club and similar to the us gx470

The bj70 and the 2 door prado with 4 people and luggage won't cut it unless you have only one change of clothes each.

I assume being a rental it would be a relatively new Prado. That means if it's a year or two old, it would have either the D4D diesel or the 1GR-FE gasoline engine. Not sure you can go wrong with either of them. If it's a really old Prado it might have a 1KZ-TE and that might seem like a dog, but I think it's relative. The way I understand it is that compared to a 1GR-FE V6 the diesels seem sluggish. But I think compared to a 3F-E or 2F, the diesel will seem just fine. I'd probably go with a 5 door Prado. I dunno what sorts of Cruising you have in mind, but it's not like a 120 series Prado (i.e. our 4Runner and GX470) is gonna exactly be the worst 4WD ever.

I'd pick the 70, unless I had wife and kids with me. Then I'd probably go with the 5-door Prado.
