Default Marlin Crawler 80 stuff?

Anyone have any experience with the stuff that Marlin makes for the 80's? Like for starters, he's got inner axles listed at $119 each http://www.marlincrawler.com/80series.html This winter I'm going back inside my front axle, to do all the PM work but also take care of the "grooves" that I've got in both inner axles, from the inner axle seal spring rubbing on there for probably 6 years thanks to the PO..

Was thinking this whole time of sending them out to be machined, then having them "sleeved," but now I'm wondering for $100 why not just get new ones? Hard to think that machining would be much less than that.. plus I'd have the stockers as a spare. Some of the other stuff on his site has me intrigued as well. What about those chromoly birfs?

You can have for that price the stock ones from Dan (or real close). I do not know about the Marlin ones, but most every thing he does is good quality. The bobby long ones are a nice piece and Have installed a couple sets with the BL chromo birf's. All nice quality. Hope this helps later robbie

Well, I thought OEM birfs cost a lot more than that. Longs are the best out there, but a little more money, actually not that much more though. And he's got inner axles too http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/

How many splines to I have? 27?

People run Longfields in 80s? I thought Long's process detempered the birf a bit to make it less likely to crack but also made it wear faster - no big deal for a part time 4wd truck. Do the last long enough in full time 4wd? Maybe I'm confusing it with one of the other birfs out there.

First you start out talking about axles then you switch to birf's. Tim being a dad getting to you? The axles are similar in price, the birf are cheaper from Bobby, yes the chromoly ones. The ones from toyota are a bit spendy. The quality looks great from Boddy, the spine count you want is 30 I beleive, not 27. good luck with your choice. later robbie

I really only need the axles.. and I use that term "need" loosely here. Do you guys agree that buying new axles is better/cheaper than having my current ones machined? I think it is.. especially when I factor in a groovy set of spare axles.. which I suspect Hulk will appreciate some day.

By all means upgrade the axles. I'd bet you really aren't talking much difference all said and done, and chromo axles will last longer than your truck. Mebbe. Pretty darn long, anywho.

So you don't think you 'need' Longfields, eh? You might feel differently after you bust a birf at 4:30 on a winter afternoon in the back country, right before an impending cold front. Or late in the afternoon waaaaay out in Moab backcountry, looking at a night with only a little water. Or....

You get my drift. I bet the missus will too, if you take my meaning...
