I believe that Spider lake is closed off with signs and such due to past problems with people not cleaning up after one self.
There is other places to filter water as UB pointed out. Be sure to bring a back up filter to make sure you can supply your needs.
You may still want to have some on board our truck to keep the dust monster off the back of the throat.

Yes the Mositoes (I can not spell this morning), those nasty little flying things can be really bad down around stagnate water and usually in the trees or shady areas. Usually only in the morning just before the sunrise and just before sunset. otherwise not too bad when it is real dark and around camp fires. That was a nice list that he petecoffee posted.
