Default WTB - Aisin Hubs for a '76 FJ-40

Looking for really good condition hubs. They aren't still available new are they?

The aisin hubs for 76-78 are hard to come by as they only came on fj55's. The 40's had drive plates or dealer installed selectros, or warns.


Why not switch it over to a mini knuckle with mini birfs then you can run the short aisins.

Good luck finding them... I'm not sure you can get the wide aisins (76-78). The mini/60 are rediculous in $ from the dealer.

You don't need the mini knuckle as you can easily modify your existing one to accept the larger birfs of FJ-60/mini trucks. You really want to do this upgrade anyway as the later birfs are stronger plus Longs are also based on the later birf size. As Wes stated you need the later (shorter) birfs with the common Asian hubs.

It wouldn't hurt to get the stronger knuckle which is compatable with more high steer kits while you in there. When I did my 76 I upgraded the knuckles, birfs, and hubs

It's only an upgrade if you DO NOT use the mini truck calipers and rotors. LC's have to have vented rotors as those who done mini non vented rotors in the past have learned. Guess the LC must me a tad heavier!

Hell might as well buy those 80 axles off Oleg at the rate you two have me replacing parts

I thought 76 axles were fine spline and 4x4 labs hi-steer and Smurfs/Longs were available for that year?

Yes but - the birfields from 1976 through 1978 are longer than 1979-up, so they use different locking hubs. As has been pointed out, Aisin hubs that fit that vintage birfield are relatively rare, they only came on 1976-1978 FJ55s and FJ45s.

Personally, I haven't seen a whole lot of Warn hubs break. Yes, they can, and they are probably weaker than the Aisins (seen Aisins break too). If you are running 35s or less, stock engine, good driver, open front, you're probably fine with stock parts and Warn hubs.

If you're heavy with the right foot, run really low gearing, run a V8, locked front, hard turn while backing uphill, 35s or larger, etc. you'll probably want to upgrade.

You can get the 4x4 labs arms for the square knuckle bolt pattern but it'd be wise to go with the rectangular pattern of the 79+cruiser/mini knuckle housing.
I can't remember what your build up is but if it's big tires and hysteer i'd upgrade the knuckle if it's 33's and down I wouldn't worry about it.

Like UB said don't bother with the calipers or non vented rotors.

Here we go in order...

-Should have but too late...
-they are
-Luke does make them for LC's (read Wes' comments on HS configs)
-They are but as mentioned they are based on 79+ so you still have to open up the trunions, either run without the hub snap ring (not recomended) or use later model (aisen) hubs.

There...clear as mud?
