My thinking was straight 2m for the rig. I'd get a 7r handheld for quadband op to take hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. and round out my radio operations.

I have the 7800. The detachable faceplate is nice. If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy the 8800.

sell the 7800 to neil and get the 8800. You could just unplug the wires and let him have all the new wiring and you have the new unit.

i have a crappy job, so i can only afford the ft2800. great radio, if inconvenient due to it's cb size (pick one or the other). antenna i found cheaper online.

If you want to stay cheap then go with straight up 2m, like Wes' rig the 1802. 2800 also is great, but you may not be able to tell a difference on trail runs.

If you're thinking 7800, then the extra $$ of the 8800 is completely worth it. I've run dual band countless times.. heck just last Saturday morning prior to our groups meeting I was talking to Red Chili a mile behind me on simplex, while talking to Groucho 50 miles away through the Leadville repeater... also let's see Dave sold his 7800 to buy a 8800, Matt wishes he would have bought the 8800 instead of the 7800.. pretty easy to put 2 & 2 together.

I did move the 7800 along and replaced with a 8800. I was not unhappy at all with the 7800, it's a fantastic radio for mobile use. Just dazzled with the glitz I guess. I'm still not 100% happy with the little controls on the 8800. Maybe in a Cadillac or 80 where you bounce around less, but it's something of a pain to deal with the small buttons and knobs unless my truck is loaded down. Such is the way with empty pickups, you are jostled around more. I'm not sure I would go with a 8800 next time to be honest, although the prices being as close as they are it's a hard decision.

I have the Yaesu FT-7800 (dual band transmitting) in my 40 with the homebuilt 2m-only antenna. I have the FT-60R handheld (dual band transmitting), and LOVE playing on 70cm to do some distance comparisons. So I'm torn because I love the homebuilt antenna but it limits my radio, which isn't smart. But I don't know if I can bring myself to put a 2m-only rig in the 40, because in an emergency I want to be able to hit as many frequencies as I can (even thinking about getting an aircraft frequency radio for some sort of severe emergency). I may put a 2m-only rig on my DD and use the antenna for that, just not sure if I would ever need 70cm around town, I'm guessing probably not. But I should probably put a dual-band capable antenna on my 40. Sigh.

If anyone wants a homemade 2m-only (transmitting) antenna, I have an extra that I will probably never use for this very reason.
