thanks a bunch for the offer. somebody at work offered me one too and i seriously thought about it, but i've got my internet with comcrap so i get seriously "discounted" cable by having the two. if i got rid of the cable, it would be almost as much for just the internet, plus i'd have to subscribe to dtv.

i sent an app in today to get the coupon for the converter and tomorrow, i'll make a bitch phone call to comcrap.

I generally ignore any and all comcast commercials, so I didn't quite catch that.

Ige, my guess is that the converter boxes will come down in price after the new year. President's weekend is historically a good time for electronics sales, and BestBuy has 3 different units right now for $59.99 - so minus $40 that's only $20. I ordered a converter coupon myself - the only thing I really want to watch on TV are Broncos games, the news and the occasional Family Guy and those are all broadcast. Everything else is just time that I could spend better doing other things, so if the set top box gives us good reception (I've played with some in mobile applications, and if you can get a signal, the picture quality really is amazing) I may drop DirectTV altogether. Or I might just have a really nice picture on the 11" 1985 TV that sits in the garage on top of the beer fridge

But they said it would take 6-7 weeks to get the coupon, so we'll have some time to watch prices.
-Matt

PS: Also check Qwest for their bundling rates - I used to have Comcast and by switching to a Qwest bundled plan I saved a noticeable amount of money - and my Qwest DSL is down much less often than my Comcast digital cable was.

comcast does some of the commericials but all the commercials/psa's about the upgrade say that if you have cable you're ok.

I don't know if it's what they're actually saying, but what they should be saying is that if you get cable through a set-top box you will be ok. All analog signals will stop broadcasting in February no matter the source (cable or over-the-air). It sucks for anyone who hasn't upgraded already, but there really won't be any way to circumvent buying either a new TV or a converter box of some sort.
