Default Question for the digital photo experts

How do you convert a digital photo to a small enough format (500x100 pixels or 19.5kb) that you can use it for an avatar or signature photo?

I've tried using every file converter tool I can find for jpeg format, and I can't shrink a photo that started out at 67Kb any smaller than 22Kb

Or just open it in Paint, make it smaller, and save it (.jpg).

If you happen to be running a Mac, there's a handy little resizer freeware called Thumbs Up. Drop and drag your photo on it and it generates a thumbnail for you. I use it all the time to make small photos for the forum.

If you're running that other clunky desktop OS, I'm sure there's an equivalent, although I use GIMP here at work (I run dual boot Linux/XP).

that's what I do. Treeroot makes fun of me for it though, but it works.

image, attributes, to see where you are, then figure out what percentage of that you need to be... then image, stretch & skew.... type in those percentages. voila.

I use Photoshop, but I also have an account with a photo-hosting site, Smugmug. The photo hosting site allows me to resize and link to the photos rather than having to upload them to the forum. Using a photo hosting site is also useful as an extra "backup" for your photos in the event you lose them on your storage drive.

I use the "Image Resizer" found here --> Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
Download it, load it, and it is resident and available by a simple right click of the mouse

There are three standard "resize" settings: Small, Medium, Large and then custom sizing to whatever you want. What I like most about it is that you can highlight 1 or 100 pictures and resize them all with one simple right click of the mouse. Makes resizing pictures to post up super simple
