Default Help with tranny decisions

So I have a sm465 and a 3spd tcase (thanks Tim) and I was wondering if that will be low enough I wheel my 72 with stock drive train right now with 38's but it I find myself on the clutch more than I would like. I was thinking about running the sm465/ classic cruisers adapter/ 3 spd transfer which I could do for 500-800$ . Or my second option sm465/np203 rangebox/aa adapter/ lc transfercase for 1000-1500$ but the drivetrain would be silly long. Or third option sm465/ marlin low range/ 3spd case for 1700$ which would be a little bit longer then the first option. If you have personally have driven any of these setups or have thought about it or not please give me your opinion.
Thanks,
Ben

By Marlin Low Range I assume you mean a ToyBox. Are you running a V8 or a F/2F? I ran a 2F/H42/ToyBox/3-speed t-case in my FJ55 and loved it. If you're going to run a ToyBox you'll be low enough not to need the granny 1st gear. My .

Sorry stock F motor. crawl ratios:
stock 2.757:1, 2.313:1, 4.11:1 = 26.21:1
option 1 6.55:1, 2.313:1, 4.11: 1 = 62.27 :1
option 2 6.55:1, 1.96:1, 2.313:1, 4.11:1 = 122.05: 1
option 3 6.55:1, ( 2.28, 4.0, 4.7): 1, 2.313: 1, 4.11: 1 = 141.97, 249.07,292.66: 1

Have you wheeled with your SM465/3sp case combo yet? I know a lot of folks who are happy with that arrangement. If want to go lower, you might also want to consider simply re-gearing to 4.56s or 4.88s.

Well i'll add my in here a sm465 and a 3 speed case is not a bad place to start you might want to re-gear like Rzeppa is saying i enjoy the 4.88 gearing with my truck which is geared a little lower than your's. mine has a sm420 and a 3peed tcase with 4.88 gear's on a small block 350 which is plenty low for any wheeling i do...

Do you feel you need the 38's? That's seriously tall if it's SOA. My thought is that with the SM465 and 3spd tc, and maybe 35's, you'll be able to wheel just about anything other than buggy lines.

i'm running v8/465/3spd case with 4.56s and 36s in my 68. only thing i would change would be the tranny. i hate the 465. it's clunky and crap compared to a cruiser 4spd. if you watch the forums/craigslist/fleabay, you can find 4.56 r&ps for a decent price. i'd spend the money on an orion instead of the adapter and machine work to put the 465 in(i have a cc adapter and wasn't pleased with that either...removed it in favor of woody's adapter. cc plate wasn't drilled correctly so i had fitment problems).
