Default March 2009 Monthly Meeting - Phil Simmons Award and Trail Leader/Gunner Program

For March 2009 Monthly Meeting, we'd like to mix things up a bit and deviate from the typical/traditional agenda. Rest assured we will still cover all the club business points and not leave anything out and we are going to do a couple of pretty significant things; present the 2009 Phill Simmons Award and conduct Trail Leader/Gunner program.

To fit everything in, the club officers and committee reports will not be presented verbally. They will be presented electronically on the forum, in this thread and we'll put together a few printed hard copies for those that do not access the forum. Traditionally, we start out with everyone introducing themselves, their forum name and what they drive - in March we will skip formal introductions. We will need to roll through old and new business quickly - so come prepared to chime in on those topics.

We are very excited about presenting this year's Phill Simmons Award and following that most of our time will dedicated to a Trail Leader/Gunner program presented by our Cruise Moab Trail Boss, Greg Luer.

Over the last couple of years, Greg with support from many others in the club has compiled an excellent program on the ins and outs of successfully and safely leading trail runs. This is great information that we believe will be very interesting to the membership. As you are all aware, Greg is a very engaging presenter and with a bunch of material to cover the program will be informative and fun.

The program is relevant for all; even if you never lead/gun a trail being aware of all that is invovled will likely enrich your on trail experience. For those that are "on the fence" on being a leader/gunner the program will give you much more insight into what is involved and help you "get off the fence". Of course, for those that are ready to become leaders/gunners the program will makes it very convinient to get the knowledge you need. Those that do lead/gun will be able to add context for what Greg is presenting.

Our monthly meeting is very important as it is our committment to get together and touch base. Our standard agenda has been very successful and is usually very full. We realize that there is really not enough time follow our standard agenda and do the Leader/Gunner Program and are going to do our best to make it all happen.

We'll also be looking for the membership feedback on this - and if appropriate maybe look to do similar things relating to our common interest in future meeting based upon how this works out.

Bumping this to the top for those that may have not seen it yet and those that may remember something about it, but need a refresher on the details.

Default March 2009 Event Coordinator Report

February of 2009 was a great month for Rising Sun events. Despite the slight rise in fuel prices over the last month, club membership continues to find good reasons to get together for various activities. Below are the highlights from the last month, followed by information on upcoming events and where to find additional details. Once again this month, here are some of reasons

Activities in the past month
1. 2009 Ham Radio Class
Nathaniel Miller assisted by Dave Armbruster as instructors, led many club members and outsiders through the process of preparing for the Technician license exam. Class was Monday nights for three weeks in a row, followed by an exam session managed by the Rising Sun VE Team. This year’s class resulted in 20 individuals successfully becoming licensed operators. Read the event report thread on the forum for additional scoop.

2. Chinaman’s Gulch
Farnham St. John and a small group ran Chinaman’s Gulch on March 1st. Great weather has been in place for the past couple of weeks and this group really made the most of it.

3. Locker Swap
With the experienced supervision of Ige Gustafson to take them through the finer points, Timm Buchanan and Randy Rosetta swapped lockers between a FJ55 and FJ40. It was later in the day when things finally wrapped up, and both rigs still needed some additional work to address leaking diff. The session was very educational, you can read the event report thread for more details and pictures.
Upcoming Events
1. Off Road Survival Camp; March 12 -15
Bill Burke will teach off road driving and vehicle recovery skills. Jeff Lewis will teach desert survival, and Curt Holiday will instruct and certify participants in wilderness first aid. For more information, visit www.offroadsurvivalcamp.com or e-mail ChuckDavis@OffRoadSurvivalCamp.com

2. Cruise Moab 2009 Trail Pre-run; March 20 – 22
Cheeseman is heading this up. Details are in the members only section of the forum. Highlights include:
Who: Rising Sun Members; Specifically those who have aspirations to become a Cruise Moab Trail Leader/Gunner. Also those veteran trail leader/gunners who want to help these aspiring leaders learn these Cruise Moab trails.
What: Run two trails a day in the Moab area to increase our Cruise Moab trail knowledge and increase our leader group.
Where: Moab, UT
When: March 20 – 22, Fri – Sun
Why: To increase the trail knowledge of Rising Sun Trail Leaders/Gunners thus showing our guests of Cruise Moab the off road experience of a life time.
How: Driving the Venerable Toyota Cruisers and Runners.

3. First Aid / CPR Class; March 28
This is an excellent opportunity for all Rising Sun Club members to get trained in First Aid and CPR. The Cruise Moab committee will be picking up the class fee for all club members that attend. The details are posted up in this thread. For those that expressed interest, please confirm your participation. For those that are interested – check it out soon – March 28th will be here before you know it.

4. Wheel Bearing Packing Party; April 4
There is a thread on the forum with all the details. For those that are participating, I will be getting in touch with each of you in the next week to start working on parts and coordinating a group buy. For those interested in mentoring, if you have not already posted up, please do so. For those planning to show up and check things out – we’ll see you there.

5. Cruise Moab; April 29 – May 3
Rising Sun’s premier wheeling event is in full swing and ready to go. This event has so much going on, we have an entire sub forum dedicated to the details. Check it out here.

6. Henry Mountains; July 3 – 5
Perry Loughridge is looking to put together a weekend run to the Henry Mountains, if you are interested check out this thread on the forum.

7. Wheelers for the Wounded; July 18
To find out more details on this event, including contact information for how to get involved, check out this thread on the forum.
Respectfully submitted

Ricardo, Lets not forget the growing in popularity NSTBC (NorthSide Toyota Breakfast Club) which meets almost every other week! All are always welcome!

You are correct. While reviewing the forum for activities, this one is very active - moving forward I need to be more dilligent in monitoring the activity of this group and keeping the club on on what's going on. For those interested (you don't have to be a northsider to participate ) details are always here.

Along the same lines, there is an OTB activity that usually preceeds (and often follows) the monthly meeting. However, you will need a smilie decoder ring and bilingual skills to keep up with the details.

Land Use Report:

No word yet on the Salida Ranger District and plans for adoption of Iron Chest. I hope to initiate a face to face meeting with them in the late spring coupled with a possible club campout for those interested.

Jenny Creek still needs sinage and post and cable fixins.. All that is TBD based on the MVUUM and snow melt.

Thats all for now!

I'm sorry that I won't be able to attend the meeting this month as we won some tickets to a great music show in Boulder that evening. Missing the pre-class for the Moab pre-run bums me out and I'll miss not being able to congratulate this year's very deserving winner of the Phil Simmons award in person. I have much respect for the winner and will congatulate them at a later time. Hat's off to them now, though!!
